If ive my central incisor remove could Ive implant straight away

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Q. I have had my lateral incisor removed 12m ago and my central incisor has a root fracture, which is slightly painful when i eat. i would like to know will my central incisor have to be removed and would an implant benefit me more than a bridge. my teeth either side are healthy. also if my central incisor is to be removed could i have my implant straight away. thanks

A. hi
if it has a root fracture then you will lose it.in the right condition you could have animplant placed at the site of the lateral incisor and bridge off it to give you back the central but you will still have to allow time for healing

My front tooth is little prominent do I need a braces advice?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Q. Hello, I have spoken to my dentist about getting cosmetic work done to my teeth, and he says I must come to him for a consultation first, so that he will be able to send me to the right dentist. I think I will need a brace on my front teeth, they are out of line, a little prominant and long and crowned some years ago. Is it right that I have to go to my dentist yet again (I saw him in January for an expensive check up), when nothing seems to have changed with my teeth? Many thanks

A. hi
either your dentist is able to do the work and he can quote you , if he cannot quote you based on the information he has you should discuss whether he is charging you for the consultation.
you are more than welcome to attend any of our practices for a free consult.
i do not understand why your dentist is talking about sending you to the appropriate dentist -this suggests he is unable to do the work.

Is it a drastic step to get rid of 6 veneers and replace with crowns

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Q. Dear doctor, I have tetracycline staining of my teeth for which I got veneers for the upper front 6 teeth (incisors & canines ect.) 4 years ago. My teeth are also big and crowded. Now its time to change the veneers as they are getting yellow. I have been told that the only way to improve my smile is crowns (not veneers)and I feel it is a bit of a drastic step to get rid of 6 normal functioning teeth and get crowns instead. What is your opinion regarding this? I am sorry to ask a difficult question especially when you have not seen my teeth. Thanks!

A. hi
like you say it is difficult to say as usually veneers do not stain that quick
there may be the option of a 3/4 coverage porcelain restoration but without examinatin i cannot confirm

My bottom row of teeth is touches the inside row of teeth advice

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Q. Hi, Ive recently been to the dentist and have always had good teeth with no pain or alignment issues. But during my last visit my dentist said that my bottom row of teeth is making contact with the inside of my top row of teeth at the front. There has been some minor wear and my dentist says over time it will get to the point where the top teeth could break. Is there any treatment that is available for me and is it at all likely that my teeth could break over time? Thank you

A. hi
at this early stage a splint to wear at night if you are grinding your teeth , or a more drastic step of building the teeth back up with white filling to restore the bite but this is not always easy

Is it possible to pull backwards the canine and incisor teeth with brace?

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Q. Hello I am a 42 year old man. My problem is my teeth are large with very long roots. My premolars have pushed my canine and incisor teeth forwards; when I bite down me teeth leave a U shaped bite mark. I would like to know if it is possible to pull backwards the canine and incisor teeth with some kind of brace, possibly by removing the first molar or one of the pre molar teeth. If so what are my options.

A. hi
yes this possible your options include conventional braces, 6 month smiles, invisalign please see the links from the sdental website for more info
you will not be appropriate for the inman aligner

How long does it take to become a cosmetic dentists or cosmetic surgeon

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Q. hello, Dr Butt I was wondering how long it takes to become a cosmetic dentists or a cosmetic surgeon and what the diffrence between the two? thankyou!

A. hi
undergraduate study is 5 years
and postgrad is what you are willng to invest yourself imn my case another 5 years before i had a reputation in cosmetics
a cosmetic surgeon will be more involved with plastic surgery procedures ie nosejobs
whereas a cosmetc dentist will treat the head and neck areas with botox, fillers , veneers , chemical peels , so there is an overlap between the two the latter has a dental surgery degree and the former usually medicine

What treatment I need for my black gums to become pink

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Q. my question is that i have always had dark gums but however they have got more dark.i have since then quit smoking .what i need is treatment for my black gums to become pink as im getting married soon. can you please help me .

A. hi
sometimes the gums can naturally change colour due to pigmentation which is difficult to do anything about.
howver they can be more inflamed and increasingly dark if there is gum disease or inflammation. the fact that you have quit smoking is letting the damage caused by smoking become apparent as your bodies natural immune defence which is suppressed by smoking kicks back in and makes you aware of the damage of smoking.
i would advise a check up and if there is a large amount of bacterial buld up or gum disease a hygienist session or appropriae treatment

I had 2 caps done rather than making them individual caps they fused it is it a right idea

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Q. I had 2 caps done that I wasn’t really sure about the way they did it. That is, they joined the two teeth together, rather than making them individual caps. The first go around they were individual caps but alot of food was getting stuck in between and so they join them…I’m not sure I like that idea…two caps joined together, what do you think?

A. hi
it is something that should have been discussed with you before it was done as there are advantages and disadvantages .
if there is underlying gum disease there is a splinting /strengthening benefit but just as easily if you do not clean them properly you will be more prone to decay.
if there was a profound space between the teeth and you were not willing to accept any space then this may have been the only option.
it goes without saying the crowns should not have been done if there was any active gum disease
something to discuss with your dentist

There is small gap between my lava crown and the gum what can be done to fix it?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr Safeer, i have recently had 4 lava crowns fitted to my front teeth . The 2 on my left side look wonderful ! the problem is the other two are not as good, on one the margin is visable (only a very small amount 1 mm ) and i am worried that the exposed original tooth is going to decay more quickly, and my other concern is my gum hasn’t filled the gap between the crowns leaving a deep recess and not only is it not athestetic it also gets food stuck in this gap ! do you think im within my rights to have the dentist rectify the work free of charge ? what can be done about the gum?? i am so worried! I had to work so hard to pay for the crowns. should i ask for a refund ? the dentist was a general dentist in haywards heath. thank you so much for helping me i am so pleased people like u help people like me god bless you

A. hi if there is a genuine gap at the gu then i am sure the dentist will rectify it, if it is not a gap but gum recession this could spring back after a few months . it is unlikely you will get a refund but if there is a genuine error in the manufacture most dentists would fix this free of charge

A. it depends if there is any facial palsy although it seems odd this has only been noticed after a few years.

I stopped smoking and my gums are still receeding is there treatment to replace the gums

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Q. I am hoping you can give me some advise. I was a smoker for a long time and my dentist told me this was why my teeth were falling out, and gums receeding. I stopped smoking purchased an oral B brush, clean my teeth regularly and deep clean them also, but the receeding sstill continued. My mum has just informed me (I am 46) that the is a hiareditary problem of gum disease, this being why my gums are receeding. the left hand side of my mouth is worse particularly in the mouth. however I now have a wobbly tooth at the next to my two front ones and the gum has receeded up, it looks awful. I will probably have two maybe three weeks before it falls out. I am terrified. I have never be blessed with beautiful skill, but been proud of my smile and lips. I have lost some teeth but at the back so never bothered me. I have started using corsydil to help but the tooth is getting worse. Can I have implants, or can I have my teeth saved? is there such a treatment that can replace the gums before it is too late. how long do implants take or if I have another problem, and need bone restructuring and how much would this cost. I need some help as soon as possible Please help.

A. hi
this is quite a complex proposed treatment and impossible to quote for without a thourough examination
however gum disease can have a genetic element but you committed dental suicide with the smoking
look at the perio-protect system to try and stabilise your remaining teeth
implants can be placed in most cases despite the gum disease

A. you do not always need root canal,no allporcelain crowns are not provided on the nhs,

The dentist told me that sealant in one the molar came off can a cavity develop that quickly?

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Q. I took my 9 yr old daughter for exam and cleaning last week to my dentist. After the cleaning, the dentist told me that the sealant in one of her molars came off and there were 2 stain pits. She said next time we come back, she would need to open up the tooth to see if it needs filling. My daughter was previously seeing a pediatric dentist and had cleaning done 5 months ago and at that time, her sealants were still all intact. Can a cavity develop that quickly? I am afraid of having the tooth drilled and opened if there is no cavity. I have been taking good care of my daughter’s teeth so I am not sure how she got the stain pits. Do we have another option for treatment?

A. hi
just because there was a sealant on the teeth this does not mean that bacteria cannot infiltrate under it as the seal degrades , the sealant just helps to minimise the chance .
i would just make sure your daughter has fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash and discuss withthe dentist the possibility of keeping it under review if there is no obvious cavitation or penetration into the dentine of the tooth.

I just got a porcelain crown and i notice a slight hole under my gumline is it normal?

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Q. Hi I just got my two front Porcelin crowns on my teeth. I notice a slight hole under my gumline. Is this normal?Should I tell my dentist/can it be filled? I got crowns to correct my gap. Thanks

A. hi
if the whole is at the gumline between the two crowns this is usually because the gums need time to mould into the space.
in smokers or patients who have never had teeth filling the space it ma never fill, however it may take upto 6 months to determine this.
if the gap is where the crown meets the tooth return to your dentist
