Can I have my crowns replaced in nhs?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Q. hi, i have really bad teeth and have a plate with 2 teeth on at the front as i lost a crown with 2 teeth on. i am now excempt from paying so would it be possible to have the crowns replaced on the nhs?

A. Hi, thanks for your question, it would only be possible to consider replacing the crowns if you still have the root. Your denture may have been placed over the root, but the root may have been removed. Without this information, it would be difficult to say. If the root remains, it may be possible to have a post crown, however if you no longer have the root, the options to replace would be either a bridge (which would be attached to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap) or an implant (which could support a new crown). I hope that this information will be of assistance to you, but should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Kind Regards

I cant have dentures anymore Could you suggest?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Q. please can somebody help me i am 37 years old and had all of my teeth pulled out when i was 18 with 2 wisdom teeth so with not a tooth in my mouth i have worn dentures for nearly 20 years and as im sure you know what im just about to say i wont be able to have any more dentures due to no bone and gum left im getting quite distressed about this as the plates do not fit in my mouth now and the teeth on the plate have grinded so i cant eat or chew my face feels is collapsing.would i not be able to have this done on the nhs.can there be a positive outcome

A. Hi, many thanks for your email. the first thing that should be ascertained is how much bone you have generally i have found in my experiance that once a CT scan of the jaw bones is done, there is usally more bone in the jaws than you think. The next step once the true answer is known about how much bone you have is deciding on the the way the teeth are to be restored. th reason for the CT scan would be to see if you are a candidate for dental implants.

Preferribly four implant in each jaw would give you fixed teeth which would not require removing, the cost of which would be approx £12,000 per jaw.

Two implants per jaw fixed to a denture would be removable but when in very secure. the cost per jaw would be £5000

The alternative would be dentures which is what you already have, but with a better fitting surface and new teeth, these are not ideal, but cost wise may range from £1000 – £4000

There are many practices that offer interest free credit to help finance the treatment. hope this is helpful.

Is there any way to hv both sides of my face look semetrical?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. I have had to have one side of my upper teeth removed, this has caused this side of my face to collasp and my mouth had lost definition and is drooping to one side, I look like I have had a stroke. Can you offer me any adice is this normal can this be corrected in any way so that both sides of my face are semetrical again.

A. hi many thanks for your email, when you lose teeth this can have a dramatic effect on the facial features on that area, unfortunately the only way to restore your face to some kind of symmetry would be to replace the missing teeth with either dental implants, bridge work if possible or a denture. hope this is helpful.

My dentist suggesting a denture what should I do?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. I have a crown that has totally come away from the gum including the post. i was told I had an abcess but that has proved to be incorrect. I was also told I have piro disease, I am unsure as to whether or not this is true. My dentist is suggesting a denture but I believe my teeth are healthy enough to sustain bridging work. What should I do?

A. hi many thanks for your email, if you are unsure what is being said is true, then my advice would be to have a consultation with another dentist to gain a second opinion. hope this is helpful.

Are wax moulds bigger than the dentures?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hi. I was womdering if you could help me. I have recently had all my teeth removed but wasnt offered immediate dentures so have gone without teeth for quite a while. I have had impressions made and have had the wax moulds done. How long does it take from that stage to actually having teeth? and are the wax moulds bigger than the dentures i will have because i couldnt close my mouth with the wax ones and they felt very thick. Thanks for your time.

a>

A. Wax molds or bite blocks are used to register how your jaws are related to eachother.  The final dentures will be smaller.  Dentres normally takes about 5 weeks to make.

Can I have all teeth removed and dentures fitted?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. need help not confirmed but know i have gum diesease front teeth crooked and one loose, can i get all removed and dentures fitted.if so how long from removal can they be fitted and roughly how much.please help.live in north lincs

A. hi many thanks for your email, if the teeth are of poor prognosis then yes this could be an option. the cost of the extractions will vary but could be as much as £1000 per arch, the dentist would make you a set of immediate dentures to begin with these are dentures placed on the day of the extractions and are worn for approximately 3-6 months while the healing takes place. the cost of these dentures per one is around £500 – £1000. once all the healing has taken place the final set of dentures dependant on quality can range from £1000 to £4000 for a set. hope this is helpful.

How soon will the implant procedure can be completed?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. my mother has just (on friday) had the rest of her upper teeth extracted after the front 6 were bridged ten years ago and unfortunately came loose a few months ago. Her dentist has provided her with dentures that are very lifelike but unbearable for her to live with. Dentures are not an option in her mind at present with her being a young 57 year old. We are exploring the avenue of implants and possibly implants with a bridge. how soon will this be able to be completed? We understand there are healing processes from the initial extraction and the implant procedure…but can you give us some kind of idea. thank you. kind regards.

A. hi, many thanks for your email, generally 8 – 10 weeks after the extractions is enough time for the healing to take place before dental implants are placed, the minimum number of implants to support the front six teeth would be 3, once the implants are placed there is usally again a waiting time of around 12 weeks before the final bridge can be placed. the price of such a treatment would cost around £6000 – £8000 dependant on where you went for your treatment. hope this is helpful.

I take them out at home so air hits the ulsers/ Rince my mouth out with warm salt water aand even rinced with peroxide… yuk Please advise. I had the dental work at aaffordable dentures.

A. You may need to get the dentures eased away from the protrusions a little more as they are probably rubbing.

I have gaps b/w my front teeth Plz help

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Q. I was diagnosed with gum disease over a year ago and i’ve now been told apart from my loose teeth my gums are well improved. my problem is i have prominent gaps between my front 2 teeth top an bottom and i don’t know what can be done to help. my dentist has told me eventually they will fall out. i hate smiling and i hate my teeth.

A. hi many thanks for your email, if the teeth will eventually fall out it maybe that you may want to explore the option of having them removed and thinking about dental implants to replace them or a removable denture so the aesthetics is better. hopr this is helpful.

Can I hv denture fitted by having most of the teeth pulled?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr Caplan, My front left tooth has gone very crooked and exposed a large part of the root and is extremely loose, the 3 teeth to the left of that are missing and i wear a bridge which has contributed to the twisting, the next 3 teeth are not in good condition and the gum has receeded. on the right side my front tooth is chipped, the next 2 teeth are slightly longer and the gum is receeding, the molars on the right are not bad but there are just gaps and 1 is missing. would it be better to have most of the teeth pulled and a denture fitted as there are only about 8 teeth on my upper jaw and most are not up to the job. could you give me advice and a rough estimate of cost. I live in North London, not too far from St Albans. Many Thanks

A. Thank you for your questions.  Apologise for not getting back sooner but I have been away lecturing.  In your situation I have often used a precision retained denture.  In America they are called removable bridges because of the accuracy of their fit.  There may be other solutions but ti sounds like this may be a likely treatment for your problem. Treatmetn costs vary depending on the type of treatment you desire. Please contact my receptionist to make an appointment for me to assess your specific problems Kind regards Dr Julian Caplan

Do you need to wear dentures before exploring the options of implant

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Q. Hi, I have had my lower teeth extracted but am not getting along with the temprary dentures provided. Do you need to be an established denture wearer before exploring the option of fixed implant dentures?

A. No, you might need to let the tissues heal, but I would look into the implant option as soon as you can.

Im using dentures for my missing teeth can Ive dental implants instead advice?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Q. i have five missing teeth and have be using dentures. i presently considering implants, but my dentist has advised me that is too expensive and does not worthy it as it is not a permanent solution. i am totally disapointed about this as i have been dreaming of the prospect. pls. can u advise

A. I think your dentist is obviously a bit sceptical of implants as we find them to be an ideal solution for patients with missing teeth. fixed teeth will always feel better than dentures and the cost is relative to the quality of life you will experience without having to wear false teeth.
Why don’t you come to my clinic I might be able to give you more information on the pros and cons of the treatments available for you. regards  Andrew 01245 268 494

I need a stable lip support to enable me to play brass band pls advice

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Q. I used to be a private patient but can no longer afford this due to life changes. I am not registered as an NHS patient, have not seen a dentist in many years and dont know what to do about accessing treatment and advice. I had most of my upper teeth removed a few years ago after I suffered tooth loss through failing crowns and bridgework. My teeth were replaced by a partial but almost complete deture I have two teeth remaining in my upper jaw one is a crown on one of my front teeth and one is a molar that is colapsing and will need extraction. I am reasonably sure I am suffering bone loss from the upper jaw as the denture now sits below the level of the crown. The denture is and has always been a poor fit and I reline this on a regular basis to stop it falling out all the time. Since having the denture fitted I have become very introverted and dont socialise much. My speach is not as clear as it was and this is affecing me in work. I think this is because I use my top lip to hold the denture in place as I am very embarrassed when it drops. I used to play a brass instrument but a combination of wearing the denture and other medical conditions stopped me doing this. Brass band playing was one of the most uplifting experiences I had to look forward to and without it I often feel dipressed. I have tryed to play but find my denture is too unstable to allow me to play with any degree of satisfaction. I had heart by pass surgery last year and dont know if my heart condition would preclude any sort of treatment. I was wondering if there was any way of providing stable lip support needed to enable me to play. I think this would help my mental and physical welbeing if I could get back into this. I hope you can give me some advice.

A. I’m sorry to hear about your situation. Dentures are often reported as being uncomfortable and embarrassing.
There are options to help regain fixed teeth such as dental implants. I personally treat many patients that have medical conditions such as heart problems etc, but as long as the necessary protocols are in place, this shouldn’t be a problem- but MUST be spoken to about with the performing surgeon. Dental implants can help to hold a denture in place to be more sturdy- they can also be placed so that a full upper fixed bridge can be placed. This would mean that the teeth stay put and you need not take them out at night etc As you mentioned before, your finacial situation has been hindering you and dental implants are not cheap. There are many dental practices that offer finance schemes and interest free facilities. This would need to be looked into. I hope this information will help.
Many Thanks
