I Am Absolutely Petrified Of The Dentist! What Can I Do As I Need Treatment?

Friday, September 6th, 2013
Q.

Hi, my problem is that I am absolutely petrified of the dentist. I tend to go twice a year and let the dentist look and the last time I went I started to have a clean but nearly I passed out I was that scared. Now I have a loose back tooth which is really very painful. My face is swollen and I can’t eat on that side so you can imagine this is a hindrance. I am on immunosuppression and on warfarin and I know both of these can possibly affect my gums. I have got to the stage where I will have anything done and I want to know if I can be put to sleep during the procedures I need, is that possible? Thank you for your time.

I Need To Know How I Can Overcome My Fear Of The Dentist, As I’ve Neglected My Oral Health?

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013
Q.

Hello Mark. My teeth are a bit of a mess partially due to my own fault and having a massive fear of dentists, and so I have been avoiding them for years (I even got rid of an abscess using raw garlic) however now I want to try and fix the damage as much as possible. I have lost four teeth their at the back so you can’t see them. My top two front teeth slightly turn inwards and I have been contemplating veneers? I am still really terrified of the dentist! How can I overcome this problem? Thank you for your time.

Hello. Is My Proposed Treatment For Alveoloplasty Necessary? What Options For Sedation Do I Have?

Thursday, August 29th, 2013
Q.

Hello. My problem is that I have a proposed treatment plan that includes an alveoloplasty after the extraction of a wisdom tooth. It is impacted and decayed. I’m fifty years of age and I will need a crown on the tooth next to it. Is the alveoloplasty necessary? Insurance doesn’t pay anything for the alveoloplasty so I’m wondering why or if the procedure is needed? Also, what kind of sedation do you think I should get for the procedure? Insurance only pays for a local anaesthetic, I’m pretty nervous in the dentist’s chair so it is something I need to consider.

Thank you in advance for any response.

My Feel Of The Dentist Has Stopped Me Receiving Treatment, Is Sedation Available?

Monday, August 19th, 2013
Q.

I been very frightened of the dentist and I have only been Three times during my lifetime and I’m a 50 year old lady. It’s come to a point when I require some much needed treatment. The last dentist I went to was a lady and said she wouldn’t refer me because I’ve already sat in the dentist’s chair. It’s only my fear of needles that stops me requiring the correct type of treatment that cause my stress and I’d like to know if I can pay to be put me to sleep during any potential procedure and how much this would cost and if this kind of thing is available on the NHS?  Thank You, Doctor.

I Am Scared Of Dentists And Haven’t Been In 24 Years, My Teeth Are Cracking Though, What Is Your Advice?

Friday, March 8th, 2013
Q.

Hi,

I’m embarrassed to have to say the following. I’m a 34yr old male who hasn’t attended a dental practise since a horrible nightmare dentist appointment when I was about 10years old. I’ve always brushed my teeth over the years and generally follow a pretty healthy diet although I do prob consume alittle more chocolate than I should at times.lol I’m not overweight or nothing though and am train at a gym regularly. A few years back while on hol my tooth cracked, I never did anything about it due to my fear. Since then I’ve had 3 teeth crack and all are at gum line. I have a 4th that is partially cracked but I’m sure this will also fall out. I’m so scared but I know enough is enough and I need to seek help. I have some loss of enamel on front teeth but no cracks or nothing. I have quite alot of tartar behind front lower teeth but not upper ones. I have some occasional pain but nothing to significant. I would like some advice in my best way fwd and if you think I’m going lose all my teeth.

Can I Still Have Bone Grafting If Im 73?

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013
Q.

Hi
For many years I have had false teeth, which from time to time have become cumbersome. Four years ago my dentist recommended that I have implants put in on my lower jaw in the front due the lack of bone at the back. Now I am finding the pins do not work for long and would love to have something more stable and permanent. I am 73 of age can you help. Is it possible to have bone grafting on the bottom jaw at my age. Although I have false teeth on upper jaw which do not give me trouble, but would very much like to have something more permanent and stable. I am terrified of dentists due to childhood experience which nearly cost me my life. Your advice and help will be much appreciated. Thank you

Im terrified Of The Dentist And My Teeth Are In So Much Pain. What Can I Do?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013
Q.

Please can someone help me. I have gone over this e-mail in my mind hundreds of times and just haven’t had the courage to write it. My hands are shaking typing this.
I am a 43 year old mother of a three year old I am a single parent living off of benefits.
I was a smoker till recently and have lost three stone and am looking after myself because of my son, I am an older mum so i want to be healthy for him.

I am absolutely terrified of the dentist so much so that I have had a toothache for two years. Lately its got so much worse. I take painkillers for a back and shoulder problem, but the pain in my back pales into insignificance compared to the pain in my tooth.

When I was a child my School was just across the road from New Cross Dentist College. Myself and other Children attended on a regular basis, I remember being held down in a chair terrified, whilst one man with a Bunsen burner heated up an instrument to give me a root filling I was about 7-8 at the time, after that I had to sit in a chair numerous times with a gumsheild on having fluoride treatment. I still had baby teeth when i was eighteen, but by that time I had stopped going to the dentist.

My teeth are in a terrible state i am in pain from three of them one is really bad. I hate meeting new people because of my teeth. Ive got no confidence at all and I’m terrified that my son will be bullied at school. I’m sure people treat me differently. My little boys father, who I am no longer with said he would not kiss me because of my teeth.

I am on anti depressants, and have even bought anti biotics online rather than go to the dentist. I know i have ruined my teeth, with smoking and drinking coffee and not visiting the dentist. But I cant live like this any more. I just want to look normal so I can be a proper mum to my son.

I cant sleep I lie awake at night thinking about it, it’s making me ill and I’m scared I’m going to end up with septicaemia. Please can you help me or do you know someone that can.

Yours sincerely

I Need Dental Work But I’m Scared Of Needles. What Can I Do?

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013
Q.

Hello Doctor Andrew Moore, I have a really big fear of having a needle in my mouth. I need to have some extensive dental work and multiple teeth removed. Is sedation dentistry an option here because I don’t see the work being done without it? I only have eight teeth left of my uppers. They have began to shift and one is broken to the gumline. I would like to have them removed and replaced with dentures if possible. Can you tell me my options here? Any advice you can give I would appreciate. I look forward to reading your response, Thank you
