why is sedation not available to nhs patients?

Q. Why is sedation not available to nhs patients? and who gives dentists the right to charge such ridiculous prices for treatment? i was quoated £315 to be sedated and have one tooth removed!!!! more than a normal persons weekly wage!!!

A. Sedation requires extra training and equipment as well as a different set of skills. Matbe you could call round a few practices for a better quote but make sure they have experience in this procedure

Amber Says :

I don’t think you can get this treatment on the NHS, especially if you have the treatment under sedation. Most cosmetic practices offer payment plans so try searching in your area for a dentist offering intra venous sedation as this will help your anxiety more than taking tablets

What are the fees for dental iv sedation?

June 16th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Aiden Says :

They vary from one dentist to another , so you would have to make enquiries at each individual practice , The fee is usually in addition to the treatment needed when its private

i m 56 years old and have a lot ot crowns and generally uneven teeth. i have partial dentures so my front teeth consist of two crowns which have always been too big so i have got used to my lower jaw sitting behind my top teeth. iI am pretty uncomfortable at the dentist is it possible to get a general anaesthetic and get a lot of work done at once. How long do implants actually last

Isabella Says :

It is possible to use general anaesthetic but only in a hospital environment so you’ll need to find a dentist who has acces to these facilities prior to treatment

Ever since I was a young boy, I have had a massive fear of dentists which has allowed my teeth to degrade a lot in the past 7 years (Broken teeth, missing teeth etc). If I go to a private dentist. Will they be able to put under local anaesthetic while they work on my teeth? I need to get my smile back in order. It has affected my self-esteem, my relationships and just about everything that has to do with first impressions.

You need to find a dentist you trust and feel confident in. You are more than welcome to come and meet for a free consultation and we can chat about all the options available. I can treat you under local anaesthetic or sedation. I look forward to meeting you.

I need to have some crowns but cannot manage to have impressions or xrays taken. My dentist referrred me to a sedation clinic where I today recd intravenous sedation and gas which was supposed to help my gag reflex. Although I remember nothing, they were unable to do the impressions or the xrays because my gag reflex was too severe. I have therefore had one tooth removed and a filling. I know I need two more crowns on the other side of my mouth. What are my options now – I feel so disappointed about this outcome. Many thanks. Kind regards

Sam Says :

You might be able to consider CEREC crowns as these can be constructed from a digital image rather than an impression. The camera is positioned in such a way to minimise the gag reflex of sensitive patients although you may still need some sedation.

I need a wisdom tooth out lower left, dentists dont sedate under nhs now apparently, so now I got to wait on a list at hospital which could take months.

I been told to try various other things first. They dont seem sure if it is my wisdom or not. Great start! I am a bit upset as explained why I was referred to have wisdom removed as nervous, and then hosp go and tell me go back to dentist first and have another filling put in at back which is deep one even though I am nervous. Its like they dont care really.

The wisdom is under the gum upright position cant come thru, no room. and bit of pain. Hosp said to have my tooth next to it refilled first to see if its that.

Dee Says :

Also to add, when I went to Guys hosp about the wisdom my dentist refer me for. This is what hosp said.
1. hot and cold on for a week
2. take diclofenic for a week even though they upset my tummy, so what!!! their attitude
3. Then he said he would make me a guard thing to sleep with in my mouth
4. Go back to own dentist have back tooth re filled in case its a leaky filling
5. If all this fails then they will remove wisdom tooth.

Its an 8wk wait for the 3D Xray as it is. They did the normal Xray and said the tooth is on the nerve but dont know what side and warned me if removal of the lip numbness etc.

I cant afford to pay privately so have no choice but to wait and suffer. It does not hurt all the time, its like a poking pain from my gum to my ear. sharp pain or dull.

Plus the fact that my own dentist refer me as I am nervous then hospital dentist said go back and have a filling in back tooth when I told him I am nervous, Its like he aint hearing what I am saying.

I could end up having it drilled out and re filled for nothing. hosp said I could end up having the wisdom out for nothing. if its a filling. I just feel that I am being messed around here by the hospital. It seems this will take months.

I have a lower impacted distal wisdom tooth. under hospital but its a bit of a wait, in the mean time I am in pain. the dentist gave me an option to have it done at a sedation clinic. The only thing is, the hospital have the Cone Beam CT scanner which will show where the nerve is as my tooth is near that have been told, but the clinic only has normal Xray machine and wont see where abouts the nerve is before removing tooth.

I dont know what to do really, whether to wait for the hospital which could be months or have it done at the clinic. I have appointment in June with a doctor but not even had this scan yet, being nhs as well they seem to take forever.

My tooth is still under the gum and near the nerve and root, but they dont know yet what side the nerve is placed or whether its between the root or what.
