why do I have to pay more money on keeping my gap closed Is this the usual practice?

Q. Hi, About a year ago I finished with Invisalign treatment that cost me $6400 for an overbite and gap on my upper teeth and a bit of crowding on the bottom teeth. After I finished my treatment, I had to pay an extra $100 dollars for bottom and top retainers. I have been wearing my retainers for a year now and I started realizing that my top gap keeps returning after I take off my retainer. This is extremely annoying after all that I have spent on Invisalign, so I called and asked my Dentist what I can do about my returning gap. He offered to place a lingual bonded retainer on my upper teeth for an extra $500 dollars. So my question is, why do I have to pay more money on keeping my gap closed when I paid such an exorbitant amount on Invisalign to have the problem taken care off. Is this the usual practice for all Dentists?

A. Hi,
it sounds like the retainer was not doing the job it was intending, the reasons for this are usually that the patient has not been wearing them regularly or as directed.
if a pt sees us and the retainers are ok but their teeth move we will charge them for the correction, as the movement is due to the lack of treatment compliance.
the price you paid for the invisalign is similar to current market prices
