what is your opinion on my broken tooth filling

Q. I have a lot of fillings and recently part of one broke off. Went to see my dentist thinking it would be re drilled but after poking it with his hook a big part of the filling popped out and he said because there is decay under the filling it needs to come out. But he covered it with temp filling and said when it starts hurting you we will extract the tooth. could it not be crowned. The tooth is at the bottom next to my wisdom tooth.

A.

It sounds as though the filling was very deep. There are options to save the tooth- depending on how much of the reamining tooth structure is left.
It will probably need a root canal filling and then a crown over the top. If you stress to your dentist that you are eager to save the tooth, then all efforts should be made to do this. It is not good for the tooth to stay in situe with infection present around it. Have you been in pain/discomfort with it?
If the tooth had decay underneath it, then perhaps the filling margins were poor to start with- or you have a sugary diet. I would advise to restrict sugar to mealtimes and see your dentist ASAP.
