What is the difference between a precious and non-precious crown?

Q.
please advise as to what a precious and non precious crown is and what it is made of. Also is it possible to do a root filling through an existing porcelain crown and then fill it with amalgam?
A.
The difference between precious and non precious crown is the gold content in the metals. A precious crown has a significantly higher percentage of gold mixed with other metals – making it more hard wearing. The exact percentages are dependent on which laboratory is used.

It is possible to do a root filling through an existing crown and it is possible to place an amalgam or white filling material to fill it up, however, this is a short term option. Your best option would be to have a new crown done.
