Very recently my crown has started to change colour. What could be the reason for this, and do I need to see my dentist?

Q. Hi Dr. Solanki, Three months back my front teeth have been covered with crowns. intially the crowns were very white but just few days back i realised that their color has changed. They have become bit off white color. I just want to know the reason for change in color and also do I need to visit my dentist to get it fixed. Also how can I avoid this from happenning in future,
A. You should definatly go back to your own dentist, Depending on what type of crown you have had fitted if it has metal inside then it is impossible to change colour, if it is a ceramic / porcelain crown then it could be the cement the crown has been fitted with.

Hi Doctor. I’m from Mumbai. Last Nov 2010 my front 4 tooths has been crowned with resin/plastic. As i noticed initial 6 months there is no color change but for last three month its started changing its color to off-white & now turning to bad yellowish. Its looks so horrible.
1. Now advise me, is there any procedure to clean & back to normal color or i have to again go for a new crown.
2. Also Plz suggest the name of best crown & which will not change its color & run long life. Thanks

Hi, I have a crown on my front tooth. I got it redone 2 years ago and it has come loose once and had to be recemented back in place. I am looking to get an implant done along with veneers as the crown in place at the moment does not match the colour of my teeth. I am wondering how long would this process take and the costs of it?

Hi there, I’d like to ask if you can put a veneer over a crown? I had venneers on my front teeth but they fell out, now one of my front tooth is discolouring so i’d like to get veneers. on my two front teeth again so I’d like to know if that’s possible and how much 2 veneers would cost. Lookingforward to hearing from you, Kind Regards,

I wish to have a consultation to discuss options for having one of my frontteeth corrected, as it is a diffrent colour dto the rest of my teeth due to a filling. Can I set this up online? And will this be free of charge as stated on the website? Thanking you for your help. Kind regards

hello doctor, i have suffered with an infected tooth and have had the necessary root canal treatment and a crown. However, the crown isn’t to the best of my liking, as it is the wrong colour and I wonder am I able to whiten that along with the rest of my teeth? If this isn’t the best option what would you recommend? I’ve read about veneers, but after my previous dentist was unable to get the colour palette correct i have less trust in other treatments. Hope you can help and thank your for your time

I have a tooth that is discolored because some years ago (13) it was filled with an amalgam filling the tooth is an incisor and should never have been filled with that but anyway and now because of my age and me being a coffee and tea drinker it has as I said is discolored I wanted a veneer on this tooth but my dentist states that for a tooth in this condition should be capped of course I disagree. I am new to this area and am ready to find another dentist. It does spoile my smile and I am selfconsice of it .

Sometimes a crown will be better than a veneer and vice-versa, perhaps get a 2nd opinion to help you decide

Hi About two years ago I got an elbow to my teeth, i went to my dentist and they told me i had a dead tooth. So i had a root canal done, I asked my dentist if there was anything i could do to just change the appearance of the dead tooth like putting a crown over it because it looks horrible. She said there is not much she can do because its infected. I’m hoping she’s wrong. Is there anything i can get?

Hi there, i have had a crown for a number of years now and it has become discoloured. Is there any way to whiten the crown or will it have to come off and be replaced? thanks for your time

Unfortunately, there is no way to whiten a crown. It would need to be replaced in order to change the color.

Hi If it is a sound tooth and it is darker than the rest, you can consider whitening the non crowned teeth . Veneering them would cost between 550-700 per tooth . As to your other questions it is not easy to comment without an examination

Hi, I knocked my two fron teeth out when I was a kid and had post crowns fitted by the NHS, however over the years my gum has now receeded from the two crowns and the metal is starting to show through black and looks rather unsightly. What if anything could be done about this? im on a tight buget but would like to get this sorted as its started to knock ones confidence. Is there any financial plan I can enter into, so that I can pay off treatment over time, if any treatment can be offred? Thanks

You will probably need the crowns replaced, you should speak to a local dentist for a full quote to see if its possible to spread the cost of treatment

You should go for a second opinion straight away. I’d be happy to help if we are convenient for you? Alternatively please find a respected restorative or general or cosmetic dentist in your area to have your situation assessed properly and for their opinion Kind regards

I am getting a permanent partial for my upper front teeth (porcelain crowns – 6 teeth) and we chose A1 for the degree of whiteness. Is that a good choice. My dentist recommended against B1 as he did not want me to look like I had chiclets!! But my daughter is disappointed that I am not going B1 Thanks!

Well the only way to properly answer that would be to see you in person….impossible to tell if it’s right for you otherwise. My own veneers are A1 but that’s right for me…can you send me a photo? Best wishes

I don’t like the shape of the crown just fitted over my implant. The color is perfect but the length doesn’t match the other canine tooth. Can it be taken off to be redone now that it is glued in? The assistant recommended to file the real tooth down to match but then the rest of my teeth will look odd. What can I do? If I want it redone will I have to pay for a new crown or does this fall under unsatisfied customer?

Its best just to go back and see what the dentist says, it might be simple case of changing the crown or there maybe a reason its slightly shorter, perhaps because of the bite?

I had a crown fitted 2008, since then it has always fallen out. Only told last year that the peg is too short and there is a couple of cms left to fit new one. I have been charged each time for getting it refitted and now want over £200 for new one. Is this right?
