the orthodontist told me I need oral surgery

Saturday, March 14th, 2009
Q.
Hi, i had an underbite initially and the orthodontist i went to advise me that i would need oral surgery(upper jaw) as well as braces. the orthodontist gave me the option to have surgery or to have braces first to see if braces alone can resolve the problem. when i was 16 my braces came off and my teeth and bite was perfect so no need for surgery. however i am now 23 and i have a slight open-bite (0.5mm). can this be fixed with braces? my old orthodontist said no as its due to growth and i would need surgery, however another orthodontist advised me that he can fix this with invisalign. can you please advise me on what is actually true?

I am looking into getting lingual braces

Monday, March 9th, 2009
Q.
I am looking into getting lingual braces, I had a consultation with an orthodontist who uses the STB light lingual system. How does STB compare with the Incognito lingual braces? Which ones are more comfortable and which one produces better results? I have a 5mm overbite and slight overcrowding in my lower teeth.

my daughter has been wearing a brace for two years

Monday, March 2nd, 2009
Q.
Please can you give me some advice. My daughter, who will be 14 next month, has been wearing a brace (she calls a train track) for the past two years on her top teeth only. We went today to have a new retainer fitted. The brace was removed last month. At the beginning of her treatment, our orthodontist explained that he was going to fit a brace because her teeth were severely sticking out. The teeth affected were the second of her front four teeth (one on each side) and they protruded over her lip when she closed her mouth (like a vampire). However, the rest of her front teeth were still milk teeth apart from these front four. He said it was unusual for him to fit a brace to milk teeth but because my daughter was conscious of how her teeth looked he was happy for her to have the brace now. During out appointment today, our orthodontist seemed alarmed. He took an x-ray which revealed that my daughter has two teeth (one of which looked almost adult in size) growing horizontally towards each other in her gums above her front four teeth (one on each side). The orthodontist said these should have come down somewhere near the sides of her mouth (though I cannot see any room left where this teeth would have come down). He has asked us to come back tomorrow and said that we will need to see a consultant at a hospital. We are very worried. 1) Could this be due to the fact that the brace was fitted to milk teeth? 2) Should the orthodontist have picked this up earlier during our two years of treatment? 3) What should we expect to happen next? Thank you in advance for your advice.

I am 24 and have had a child premolar extracted

Monday, January 12th, 2009
Q.
I am 24 and have had a child premolar extracted (top left, the premolar closer to the molars) three months ago as it was mostly fillings and there wasn’t much tooth left. I don’t have an adult premolar to replace this, though I have been told I can have an implant in the gap. However, as my upper incisors overlap, I was wondering if I could get a 6 month or invisibrace that would straighten out my teeth, and reduce the gap. I know that these types of braces can straighten the teeth, but are they appropriate to help reduce the gap if I have a tooth missing? Many thanks!

My front two teeth have always been stuck out

Thursday, January 8th, 2009
Q.
My front two teeth have always been stuck out teeth so when I was younger I had a total of 6 teeth taken out but never a brace put on for some reason. I think I have a large overbite as there is a large gap between the top and bottom teeth when closed. I feel that the front teeth are pushing further forward – is this possible? When I wake up I can certainly feel that my jaw isn’t aligned and bottom teeth are much further back. Do you think fixed braces would push the teeth back, but I would need surgery to sort my jaw line out? Can this procedure be done only by a cosmetic dentist – would my normal dentist have to refer me?
