I m 19 Can I get braces for free under the NHS scheme

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
I was referred to an orthodontist when i was 14 to have braces fitted in. I had the braces fitted in but after a couple of days i had them removed as i did not feel comfortable wearing them. I am now 19 and in full-time education at university. Do you think i will still be able to get braces free under the NHS scheme?

Can there be any emergency treatment for terrible toothache in NHS?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr Justin Glaister! I am writing to you, as my husband is suffering from terrible toothache for the last 2 weeks. He took so many painkillers by now, and still no help. His tooth is aching almost every day, or every second day. We both know, he should go to a dentist urgently, but sadly we can’t afford those high prices. He is on the NHS waiting list, but it is ever so long. Is it true, if he goes to the hospital for emergency treatment, he gets it for free? We come from Hungary, and waiting to go home at the summer, and sort it out there. But this pain is getting unberable for both of us. Is any advise you could give him? Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you.

Is its possible to replace amalgam fillings?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
Hi, I am 15 and have suffered from amelogenesis imperfecta my whole life. At the moment, all of my molars have stainless steel caps on them and most of my teeth are heavily restored with amalgam fillings. Apparently, these restorations were stronger when I was younger, but now I am getting bullied at school because it looks like I am chewing tin foil all the time! Is it possible to get these replaced with tooth coloured restorations and can this be done on the NHS?

What is the success rate for implants on people with gum disease?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
Dear DOCTOR I suffer with periodontal disease which is controlled and my teeth are not loose. Recently I have had a sharp pain on chewing under a molar that is crowned. Following an x-ray I have been told that there is chronic infection low down irritating the nerve and that the tooth will have to come out. I am an NHS patient but am prepared to pay privately to have an implant which the NHS dentist would do. I am told there is no rush to decide providing the pain is only occasional . Does this mean it will not make me ill if I take my time . Also what is the success rate for implants on people with gum disease and would the infection need to be treated before commencing or is chronic infection something that does not go away.Thankyou

Could you suggest temporary filling product in the UK?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
Looking for a temporary filling product in the UK? I’m looking for a “temporary filling” product like “Cavi fix” on sale in Chemist shops in the UK.? Just lost my filling and can’t afford to go and see a dentist…need something to block the hole so the nerve doesn’t start to play up in a couple of weeks time…. Just found Dr denti ” Tooth-Fil on line… but would like to know if its available in Chemists shops. thanks for any info. Plase remember that I’m asking this question because for the moment I CAN’T AFFORD to go and see a dentist, so please dont suggest that I do.

I m 18 can I have treatment for my teeth at NHS?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr. Patel, At the age of around 12 I chipped my front tooth after a fall leaving less than half of my front tooth behind. I had a filling applied to this, but the tooth has gradually darkened over time. I’ve heard that this is due to internal bleeding within the tooth. Yesterday, this filling fell out and I am yet again left with half a tooth. The tooth in question is a few shades darker than my other front tooth and it looks very bad. I’m an 18 year old on a gap year, with no money at all. Would the NHS be able to help with my problem because it really looks awful? Thank you
