Is tooth extraction my only option if my tooth is infected after a filling has come out?

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010
Q.

Hi, I am hoping you can help me. Approximately 7 years ago I had root canal treatment on one of my bottom molars and this was then filled up, a crown was never advised. At the weekend, the filling has come up and I have been in pain. I have had an xray today and it shows that I have an infection which I have antibiotics for and the dentist is suggesting I have the tooth pulled out rather than a crown. Is there no way the tooth can be saved?

Can I get implants as a solution to decayed teeth?

Friday, November 19th, 2010
Q.
hi there i’m 20 years old and due to lack of oral hygiene and a fear of the dentist 4 of my back teeth have just literally chipped away leaving rotten ‘stumps’ in my mouth, this has happened over the course of 2 years and is getting worse. two of my back teeth have been extracted the rest are filled or need to be. i’m too embarrassed to smile. what would you suggest i do? would implants be the best alternative in the long run?,

Do I need to get an implant fitted straight after having a tooth extracted?

Thursday, November 18th, 2010
Q.
My back molar was extracted and then the 2nd molar broke (there is 1/4 left). I have had a root canal, but now there is a vertical fracture and I need to get the tooth extracted and replaced with an implant. I was trying to wait for about 6 months but now the remaining tooth is breaking which will leave only the root. Can I leave the root in until I am ready to have my implant which will be in about 6 months. There was an infection forming so the dentist gave me some antibiotics. What can be done? My dental surgeon likes to do implants within 10 days of extractions but I cannot afford it.,

Are there any other applications that may heal my infected tooth rather than have it extracted?

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan, I wonder if you could give me your opinion on my plight. For the past four months I have had an infection in my gums. This has caused some receeding of gum line on the upper and lower teeth and a stubborn abcess on a front upper tooth. Initially I was told that the infection is opportunitist because as we age gaps appear between root and bone and to take a mouth wash. No solution I then returned and was advised the only way to cure the infection would be to extract the tooth. There was no other remedy – once the infection occured its for life. Unfortunately, the bone may now be damaged and being diabetic an implant highly unlikely. At 48 I face the necessity of a denture. Are there any other applications that may heal / remedy the infection other than extraction. Any observations would be much appreciated. Best ,

I can’t get my infected tooth root canalled until late November. What can I do to alleviate pain in the meantime?

Monday, November 1st, 2010
Q.
I started having pain on one of my teeth about 10 days ago. Last Friday I went to my dentist who took an X ray, cleaned my tooth and put a temporary filling. The following day I was not feeling any pain but 2 days later the pain came back and is constant. I went back to my dentist today and he told me that I would need root canal treatment. Unfortunately the surgery I go to is extremely busy and I don’t have an appointment for my treatment until the 20th November which means that I have to wait over a month. I am worried because I know that the pain is not going to go away until I get treated. So I would like to know if there is any way I can ease the pain until then. The infected tooth is a molar so I was wondering if it wouldn’t just be better if I had the tooth removed instead of waiting that long. I hope you can advise me. Thank you. ,

Would it be possible to have an immediate implant?

Monday, October 4th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Solanki, Do you do the Immediate implant placement? I am told by my brazilian dentist that I need to extract one of my tooth and that he recomended that I did the immediate implant placement called in portuguese’ implante com carga imediata.’ I can not afford to loose this tooth and will not return to Brazil in time to deal with his infected tooth. If you can not help me, could you recommend me someone? Thank you for your attention, Yours sincerely,
