Can there be any emergency treatment for terrible toothache in NHS?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr Justin Glaister! I am writing to you, as my husband is suffering from terrible toothache for the last 2 weeks. He took so many painkillers by now, and still no help. His tooth is aching almost every day, or every second day. We both know, he should go to a dentist urgently, but sadly we can’t afford those high prices. He is on the NHS waiting list, but it is ever so long. Is it true, if he goes to the hospital for emergency treatment, he gets it for free? We come from Hungary, and waiting to go home at the summer, and sort it out there. But this pain is getting unberable for both of us. Is any advise you could give him? Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you.

Is its possible to smooth the tooth by polishing or buffing it?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
I had a white filling placed on one of my front teeth a few years back, I don’t think the dentist was comfortable with the bonding procedure, and since then the surface of that tooth is lumpy and uneven. Would it be possible to have a dentist “smooth” the tooth out by buffing or polishing it? Thank you.

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
I’ve just been given my treatment plan by my dentist, and I have three different options for crowns. Despite googling all three terms, I still can’t find out the exact difference (besides the price!) Can you please tell me the difference between Porcelain, Ceramic and Procera crowns?

What is the success rate for implants on people with gum disease?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q.
Dear DOCTOR I suffer with periodontal disease which is controlled and my teeth are not loose. Recently I have had a sharp pain on chewing under a molar that is crowned. Following an x-ray I have been told that there is chronic infection low down irritating the nerve and that the tooth will have to come out. I am an NHS patient but am prepared to pay privately to have an implant which the NHS dentist would do. I am told there is no rush to decide providing the pain is only occasional . Does this mean it will not make me ill if I take my time . Also what is the success rate for implants on people with gum disease and would the infection need to be treated before commencing or is chronic infection something that does not go away.Thankyou

What can be done to make my teeth healthier?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
Hi, I was wondering if there is anything that can be done to make your teeth healthier if they are not as healthy as they should be? I know the normal flossing, brushing, healthy eating and mouthwash but can i be doing anything more? I am terrified of dentists and have recently been for a checkup after about 10 years of not going. My teeth are not too bad, i have been told but i have a wisdom tooth that needs to come out( which has just broken on me). I have also had a filling fall out a few years ago but due to my fear did not get it sorted out but now the dentist says that the gum has grown up though the whole. My dentist says that it has to be removed but when i went for the xrays the dentist at the hospital said that i could have a rootcanal instead which would save the tooth. Apart from the gum thing the tooth is healthy and the roots and centre of the tooth are absolutely fine. How will a root canal help the gum issue? Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Could you please advise me on smile makeovers?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
Hi there Justin, i could really use some good advice. I am hoping you can help me, my dilema is this…….. a good few years ago my dad who is a dentist put in 3 crowns on my incisors and my left lateral incisor and then a gap appeared between my 2 front teeth. I am a proffesional singer and my smile is everything to me so i was livid ! so i went to see a cosmetic surgeon near by and i have paid out a hell of alot of money to have my top 10 teeth done properly. This was september last year and i still have yet another wax up in !!! i have been 5 times to visit the lab to go over shape and size and there every time i take photots of teeth i like the look of and go over and over the shape but they cant seem to get it ? I am starting to get phobic of going back and having yet more injections and more wax up smashed out of my mouth its getting very frustrating and now one of the laterals is getting very tender and looks like a root canal might be in order. anyway the look i am going for is similer to katie prices l.a.a smile but my mouth is alot smaller and i have a small arch apparently ? so putting teeth the same size as hers just makes me look like a horse so i need get this sorted as its driving me crackers. My dentist seems insistent on using the same technition but said if all else fails he will go to the da vinci labs. I am thinking of saying its gone on long enough and to go to da vinci. what do you think ? any advice would be valuble to me. kind regards.

Could you plz explain me how my tooth be saved?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
About 2 weeks ago, I was hit with a football. I experienced pain and noticed my tooth was loose in every way. Quickly, I braced my tooth using floss and other tooth on opposite side. I have not, and today used front teeth for anything. After a few days,I experienced no pain and sensitivity was reduced. Hot and cold has no effect. Considering that I have very good teeth, 8 or 9 days later, I knew something wasn’t right. I went to my local emergency dental clinic. After the Dr. evaluated x-ray, he said I did the right thing (bracing). The “right part” of root on my lower incisor is cracked. He noticed no inflammation. He wants me to keep bracing and schedule appt. with my Dentist in 2-3 weeks. He said to look 4 color change and on that later appt. with my Dentist, they will run test… Can you please explain the test? Also, I know teeth are (avascular), what is it that I’m hoping for? I’m so upset and fear the worst. If needed, regardless price, I will have to get an implant asap. Please explain how my tooth may be saved? Thank you
