I have 6 veneers and all of them are loose and beginning to rot?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
Q.
I had veneers fitted on 6 of my front teeth at the top and they are all beginning to come loose as apparently the teeth under them are beginning to rot (i only had them done 3 years ago). I have had to have one of these teeth removed completely (one right at the front) and am now having to wear a denture plate thing which keeps falling out when i speak and i cant eat with it in. I have not been able to leave the house or see anyone because i am so depressed and my gp has put me on anti depressants (not just because of the tooth – have lost loads of family recently amongst other issues and losing my tooth was the straw that knackered the camels back) . in circumstances like this where patients are upset about the way they look because of thier breast size the nhs sometimes do breast implants – is there any way of getting a tooth implant done on the nhs as i am a single parent and was made redundant a while ago and can’t go back to work as I have just been diagnosed with ME so i just cant afford much – is there anywhere that could help? besides – arent teeth cheaper than boobs?

I got fitted with veneers but they are sore and painful

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Q.
I wanted a pretty smile so I had my upper 4 front teeth fitted with veneers a little over a year now. The veneers were way to long and bulky. I looked like Buggs Bunny and talked with a hisp. The dentist and I have yelled at each other. He said he will not replace them but keeps grinding them down. I have had pain and throbbing ever since, especially at night (I do wear a night guard because I clench my teeth). The pain at night keeps me awake. I cannot lay on my back or my side without feeling like my front teeth are being pushed around. I cannot get releif. The teeth look OK now but the throbbing at night won’t go away. What do you suggest? I really depressed about this.

Are veneers the quick fix to close gaps?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
Q.
Below is the Q&A from yesterday. I wondered whether you could clarify things for me. You said veneers are the quick fix, does that mean that you would always expect to close all gaps and never use veneers or does the bite determine this? I am aware I would need a retainer for a couple of years but what I don’t want is for my teeth to move to fill the gaps. Is it possible to use something behind the veneers to fill the gap to prevent the movement? Q. I am 41 and have had fixed braces for nearly 2 years after having had 4 teeth removed. My lower jaw is fine but I have been told that I will be left with gaps on my upper jaw behind my canines due to the size and shape of my teeth. Is this normal? It has been suggested that I now have 4 veneers to hide the gaps, is there any other alternative? Will the veneers stop my teeth from moving? A. The veneers would be a quick way of reducing the size of the gaps instead of the brace which can often take 1-2 years to close the gaps sufficiently. They don’t stop the teeth moving so a new retainer would be needed after they are fitted

Im 24 i have undergone re root canal treatment but the pain persists

Saturday, September 5th, 2009
Q.
Hi Mr Moore, I was a patient of yours until you left Mr Clough’s practice when I was 15. I’m disappointed to report that the poster has been removed from the ceiling of your old consulting room so now there’s nothing to distract patients from the drilling! Anyway, when I was 9 I fell over and broke my front two top teeth. When I was 15 you root canaled my front two teeth as well as the next one along to the right and then veneered them. I’m 24 now and i’ve known for some years there was a very slow growing infection above the root of the front left tooth and the one to its left. I was advised for years by oral surgeons at St John’s to leave it alone for the time being, until last November when Mr Falconer advised me I should have them re root canaled. Mr Brady at Clough’s practice re-did the front two, and also canaled the one to the left of the front two for the first time. This was done at Christmas. So now all four at the front have been root canaled – the middle two twice each, and the ones either side once each. I’ve been back to see him today because i’ve been experiencing sensitively for the last 3 weeks, usually when I have a drink. This in itself surprised Mr Brady because you’d think due to the very nature of a root canal that I wouldn’t be able to feel anything. Unfortunately the dark patch on the xray above my front left and the one next to it is darker again. We don’t think the bone ever fully recovered, despite the cleaning material that was packed into them at Christmas, however, the patch is now definitely darker again. Mr Brady mentioned that he didn’t think it was infection as such but the bone density seems to be suffering. Mr Brady is quite keen to do an apisectomy. I’m not quite so keen as my Mum ( who you also treated over the years) had two of these done at St John’s not all that long ago and suffered some gum recession. As i’m only 24 and have veneers on the front two i’m nervous about this side effect. The alternative Mr Brady suggested was to privately see an endodontist to re root canal again – he’s referred me to Richard Hems at the Colchester Dental Referral Centre. This option would be much more costly, presumably with no risk of gum recession, but I don’t know what the success rate is like. We very much trusted you for all the years you were our family dentist and i’d really appreciate your opinion as to which might be the better option for me. Kind regards

Should i get all my teeth crowned?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009
Q.
I had 4 upper front teeth veneers replaced a year ago after 23 very successful years with the original veneers. However, I had chipped one and the others were showing an ugly black line as a result of gum recession. The replacements have been nothing short of disastrous because although they look great, they keep falling off and one cracked before breaking off. My dentist (who fitted the originals and in whom I have complete faith) is baffled. I am due to go back on Monday because another has dropped off (for the third time), this time after only 2 weeks of re-bonding. I have looked at the procedure for veneers on your website and my dentist seems to be following that to the letter. Are there different types of cement for bonding? I would appreciate your comments because the alternative now is to have them all crowned.

Can u gimme some advice on veneer replacements?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q.
Hi Dr Caplan Just to say thanks very much for kindly replying to my question about my worries about possibly unsecure veneers, and putting my mind at ease. Could I just ask you for your expertise on this q, as these veneers I am referring to are uneven, my dentist has offered to replace one of the central ones for me in order to make it match the other side (as it was in temps!) to make things look more even and symmetrical. In your experience, is replacing one central veneer ok in terms of aesthetics or is it a bit too risky in terms of an exact colour match etc? Im wondering if I would be best perhaps asking for the central 2 to be replaced together.. just want to get the right treatment. Thanks so much

How much would it cost for tooth whitening and leveling?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q.
Hi, my teeth are pretty much straight but different lengths. I want to get them whitened but also want them level (its like they need filing across), is this an easy procedure and roughly how much would a dentist charge. Thanks
