Ive a severe acid erosion and bruxism what can i do and can i prevent further damages

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009
Q.
Hi I am quite upset about recent findings from 2 different dentists that I have severe acid erosion and bruxism. 2 years ago I had no problems at all, although my diet/drinking habits have not changed. There are no problems with my gums or x-rays and I have never had a filling so now I am gutted about this. What I’d like to know is that I have been told different things by different dentists about the effects of swimming on teeth. I swim 3 times a week for 1 1/2 hours a time. This has been a new thing over the last 2 years. Could this be the problem and how can I check the PH levels of my local pool? My current dentist is insisting that I grind my teeth but I do not believe this to be true but at one time I was on a high dose of Citalopram and have read that this can cause grinding and I think it did in my case. I was on this for about 3-4 years. I am also a vegetarian and have been told this is the problem!!!??? so confused. What can I do and can I prevent further damage. I cannot stop swimming as this is now for me a form of anti-depressant. I am miserable. Thanks for you help.

Q.
My teeth have over the past few months become very thin looking and almost transparent looking and people have mentioned they look this way. I was wondering if anything could be done about this and how much it would likely cost at an NHS dentist.

my teeth become very worn away and sensitive due to acid erosion please advice

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
Q.
Hi,I have become increasingly worried about my teeth over the past few years, as they have become very worn away and sensitive due to what I have been told is Acid Erosion. Not only have they become transparent at the ends, and seem to be getting progressively worse, they are also starting to chip and I have cracks down the middle of my incisors. I have been to two different dentists, and they have both told me that if anything my teeth are so good that they are too long and are just wearing because of this. I was also told that I grind my teeth in my sleep and I should wear a night guard.. I was wondering if it is possible to use bleaching trays as a form of guard that I recently used, instead of seperately buyin a night guard. I’m very dissatisfied with the dentists I’ve seen as they seem to be baffled as to why my teeth are so transparent at the ends, and don’t think it’s my diet as I don’t eat citrus fruits etc that claim to cause this acid erosion. I do use a special toothpaste called ‘Sensodyne Pronamel’ to help strenghten the remaining enamel and prevent further damage but, I really don’t think it has made any difference… I have always had really good teeth but, these problems are really starting to depress me and everyone who is speaking to me in person are starting to notice these problems especially the acid erosion. Please write back to me, as from what I have read on this site, you are a very good dental surgeon. Regards

Q.
Hello, I drink sugar free soya milk as I’m intolerant to cows milk but someone told me it’s really bad for teeth as it causes a lot of decay. Is this true? The type of soya milk I use is sugar free with added calcium. Also is herbal teas damaging to teeth? (eg peppermint tea) Thankyou

my teeths enamel has worn away

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009
Q.
Hi, i have noticed my teeth’s enamel has worn away slightly on the bottom half of my two front teeth leaving grey patches and are quite sensitive. i don’t really want to get veneers as the upper half of my front teeth are in good condition. My dentist put it down to a combination of tetracycline medicine used for a long time, fruit juice and over brushing i was just wondering what the best option would be to repair the grey areas i asked about white fillings placed behind the teeth, but i heard you cant have them if your bottom teeth bite behind your top teeth is this true? and also i have been using home whitening trays will this remove enamel due to acidity? cheers

My top front teeth have tooth erosion caused by fizzy drinks

Thursday, December 4th, 2008
Q.
Hi, My top front teeth have tooth erosion caused by fizzy drinks. They don’t look to bad at the moment, but you can notice if you look closly. My enamal is coming off the tops of my teeth and the bottoms look a little see-through. I am rather concerned about this and was wondering what the cost and procedure would be, without having to get porcelan veneers as i do not have the money for that.

My daughter has been told that she has lost most of the enamel on her teeth

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008
Q.
My daughter has been told that she has lost most of the enamel on her teeth it has worn away and they need bonding to prevent them becoming sensitive, I a concerned that she is taking this at face value without rewsearching the long term effects etc. Is this a well known method of dealing with this problem? She says its the fizzy drinks she had as a child Could it be the cider she now drinks as she had fine teeth till she got to 18!
