should i have my tooth extracted and implant on same day

Q. Dear Dr Suri I have a cracked molar in the lower jaw that requires extraction. I wish to have an implant so my question concerns what type of implant and procedure I should choose. Is it better to opt for a conventional implant and have it done at the time of extraction? – or – Extract the tooth and wait for the bone to grow back, then have a self tapping implant that doesn’t require drilling? kind regards

A.
Usually when we carry out implants at the practice the tooth is taken out and synthetic bone crystals are placed in the socket. This is then protected and sutured and left to heal for a period of 4 months. This ensures that the bone is strong enough to support the implant. We then place a conventional implant and let it heal for 4-6 months before the crown is placed on top. We do it this way to ensure maximum success of the implant.

When the tooth is extracted is very important that the dentist that does it carries out the procedure very carefully to maintain the bone and not to disrupt the blood supply too much. Also it is advisable not to leave the socket open. It should be packed with synthetic bone so that the integrity of the ridge is not lost.
I hope this helps
