Should I have a dental implant or a cantilever bridge?

Q. I have had a fixed bridge for about 8 years. However, during a recent check-up my dentist told me that the tooth at or near the end of the bridge has decayed and needs to come out. He has suggested either an implant or a cantilever bridge to replace decayed tooth. The ‘tooth’ is in upper jaw towars back. Is a cantilever bridge strong enough and is it aestethic. Implants sound invasive, painful as well as expensive!,
A. Implants shouldn’t be painful but they will cost more than normal bridgework. This is due to the extra cost of the procedures but the long-term success rate should be much higher than bridgework, especially cantilever bridges which a have a tendency to put extra stress on the adjacent teeth,
