one of my back teeth has broken down to the gum

Q. One of my back teeth has broken down to the gum. I do not have any pain but my dentist insists on root canal treatment in order to fit a post for a crown. Do I really need root canal treatment or can the tooth be built up to fit a crown?

A.

Teeth can be pain free because the nerve has died over a long period of time without significant discomfort.
Also your dentist may need to use the root space to hold the new crown in place. Without prior treatment you would develop an abscess.
I think it is likely that your dentist is correct.
Let me know how you get on
