Okay to leave fallen out dental crown until dentist returns?

Q. My crown has fallen out (back tooth) but my dentist is away from the practice for another week. I don’t really want to see a locum as my own dentist puts me at ease. As I’m not experiencing any pain/discomfort (yet!) will I cause further damage by waiting for my dentist’s return?,
A. It is difficult to give you a definitive answer as I am unsure what is underneath the crown (e.g. has it been root filled?, how much of the solid tooth is left?). It would be better to see someone sooner rather than later – the locum could always temporarily cement the tooth on, but if you only feel comfortable with your regular dentist then try to go easy on this side with eating and book an appointment with them as soon as they are back.
