My tooth is loose but it doesn’t hurt will I lose it

Q. I have knocked my front tooth loose, it wobbles but is not painful or sensitive to hot or cold. Could you adivse whether I will need to lose the tooth of if it can be saved?

A. Traumatized teeth that have become loose may be loose within the tooth socket or have a fracture in the root of the tooth.

If the tooth is loose in the socket it sometimes can be saved by initially splinting it to adjacent teeth to allow the surrounding bone to harden up. If the tooth darkens or there is a problem at the root tip the nerve may need to be removed.

If the root is fractured and the tooth is loose it is likely that you will need it removed and replaced with a tooth substitute , such as a dental implant.

Please see a dentist as soon as possible to prevent further damage and to increase the chances of saving your tooth.

Gina Says :

My 13 year old son got hit in the tooth by a cricket ball 2 weeks ago. He knew he’d done it but tooth wasn’t loose and it didn’t hurt. Now he’s saying it’s not loose but it feels vulnerable for some reason and it’s now slightly discoloured.

I will get an appointment at the dentist on tuesday but do you think it will get worse and he will eventually lose the tooth.
