my front tooth are relatively big what is the maximum they could be shortened?

Q. Hi Dr, My front four teeth are relatively big compared to my other teeth and I wanted to ask what is the maximum they could be shortened. The front two are over 10 mm, I would really like them reduced by 4mm, but is that not safe as it will cause tooth pain after? Thanks

A. It is hard for me to comment. You are right when you say that the health of the tooth may be compromised. You only have a few mm of enamel- under the enamel is dentine. If you have too much enamel taken away, then you may experience alot of sensitivity- and can make your tooth more prone to dental decay- not to mention that the dentine is darker in colour than enamel. You must be aware that the enamel is a protective layer for your tooth. You ideally need to discuss what your options are with your dentsit as he/she knows best. 4mm is alot to take off the length of a tooth. You may want to consider veneers.
