My 4 year old daughter’s front tooth is grey after a fall. Can this be whitened?

Q.
Hello, my daughter has a top front tooth which has gone grey after a fall. She is 4. She has seen our dentist and we’re being careful with her with regards to possible infection. We didn’t ask him, and we’re now wondering, is there anything that can be done to whiten the tooth or is this a bad idea, or even impossible at her age?
We are conscious of possible bullying/hurtful comments which would affect her personality as she is sensitive and already quite shy.
My wife and I are both teachers and know how children can be in school environments.
We would appreciate your comments.

Dear Enquirer,
You are not the first parents to be feeling concerned about this situation, however, it is very common for children to knock their front teeth. As the baby teeth are very fragile, any disturbance can cause some bleeding into the tooth and hence the dark colour. There is nothing to worry about unecessarily as it is unlikely the tooth will get infected and there is nothing you can do in any case to prevent any infection. If it does happen you will notice the tooth may get a little loose and there may be some swelling at gum level around the tooth. This is treated with a course of antibiotics.
Your daughter is too young to have any treatment on this tooth and the best way to deal with it is to turn it into a positive and let her know how special she is, having a different colour tooth than her friends. It is a tough one with children in school environments but the best you can do is to provide her with loving support and not to draw attention to it. In a year or two this tooth will be history. I hope this helps and try not to worry,
Regards,
Sunita
