I’ve had my bridge since 1977, but due to my gums receding there is now a dark line.

Q.
Hi,
I have a dental bridge which was fitted in 1977 and is still going strong! However, as the gums have receded slightly, a fine dark line is now showing at the gumline. Can I have this bridge replaced or is it likely that the two teeth either side of it would not now be suitable to support a new bridge? If so, what are the best alternatives? Also, would I be better to put up with the appearance of the bridge as it is and wait until it becomes loose or presents me with some other problem, before trying to replace it?

Many thanks

A.
Hi these are great questions thank you

If the bridge is functionally stable, healthy and still going srtong then there is probably no reason to replace it. However if you’re unhappy with the aesthetics then there would be an elective reason to replace it for something better looking.

If the teeth supporting the bridge are still strong and suitable to hold a new bridge then this would be the simplest way to replace what you have. Involving dental implants into the treatment plan could complicate matters but maybe a better long term option, depending on the long term prognosis for the teeth holding the bridge.

All of this could be assessed at a consulation appointment and more accurate answers and options given on that day

Hope that helps?

Best wishes

Mark
