Is there any less obtrusive braces other than regular metal braces

Q. Hi Dr Caplan My daughter is 18, she has quite a severe prognathia – she has been advised she will need a mandibuloplasty which she is very prepared to have. Her main concern relates to the bracing afterwards – she had a consultation last year with an orthodontist who advised she would need a metal brace – an invisible would not be appropriate. She’s off to uni next september and the bracing is her biggest concern. Are you able to say if there are less obtrusive brace, perhaps even an option after a few months – if this were outwith the NHS we would be prepared to pay ourselves Regards

A. A lingual ( inside brace) may be possible but you really need to discuss this with your orthodontist.
