Is it effective to align teeth by extracting one?

Q.
Recently had a lower central incisor extraction inorder to straighten my botton incisors. Apparently there was no room whatsoever to avoid extraction due to a full compliment of 14 teeth. very distressing due to the current gap in my lower arch. How successful is this treatment , and what would be an alternative if at thre end of treatment there is relapse even with permanent retainers.I am 50 years old and extraction has had a psycological effect upon me as the extrcted tooth was healthy.
Thankyou

Hi and thanks for your questions.

My question back to you is whether or not you had any orthodontic treatment to realign your teeth following the extraction…it’s not clear from your question if you’re having anything to align? This would be the most ideal thing and should be able to close the gap.

If so what kind of treatment are you having? Is it some kind of invisible brace or fixed appliance braces?

Fixed bonded retainers are ideal following treatment completion and will reduce the risk of relapse. I also advise double retention with a clear Essix retianer that sits over the top of the wire. Even with double retainers some replapse can occur but that can vary from person to person and the type and quality of the orthodontic treatment and the success of it’s outcome and influence the long term stability of your result

Hope my answers help out

All the best
