I was wondering if there any orthodontic surgery that widens the jaw?

Q. Hi, I was wondering what a suitable age for placing veneers on teeth is, as I am 16 and my dentist has recommended this as a follow up from my braces, as my main problem is that I have quite a narrow jaw, which I personally really dislike. So my dentist is creating gaps between my teeth in order to fill them up with veneers, though I don’t see this having much effect. And as I have understood I am too old for a rapid palate expander, I was wondering if there was any orthodontic surgery that widens the jaw?

A. You need to discuss your concerns with your orthodontist who can discuss all of these issues in detail with you and your parents. It seems a shame to have to have veneers placed if you are having all of this orthodontic work to starighten them, but I would trust his/her judgement when it comes to the treatment plan drawn up for your individual needs. Good luck.
