Q.
I am thinking of having tooth whitening but a friend said i would not be able to drink red wine, coke, or coffee,is this true, thanks .
A.
Tooth whitening is a fantastic treatment when carried out professionally. Your friend is partially correct. If you’re having an in surgery whitening treatment such as Zoom/Britesmile then you need to avoid dark staining substances for 4-5 days after your procedure to let the colour stabilise. If you don’t do this then the whitening results will not last as long.
If you are continuing the whitening process with a take home kit, you must avoid the staining substances for the period of time you are carrying out the home whitening, followed by another 4-5 days after you have finished the home whitening. After this you can resume normal eating and drinking activities. If however, you are a smoker, drink lots of tea/coffee/red wine etc your results may not last as long and you may require a top up treatment within 2 years.
Please don’t be put off, it is a very worthwhile treatment and professional tooth whitening systems delivered by a dentist are safe, effective and fast.
I hope this helps,
