I want to straighten my teeth but I am worried that it will not be worth it as there is gum disease in my family, should I just get dentures instead?

Q.
My dad had pyaria. His teeth were perfect but had to have them removed and received dentures because of disease. My gums have been receeding badly for years. I can see the roots of my teeth. Last dentist appt they did a measuring of gum to bone. Mine were not good. For two weeks now I’ve been tasting “infection”. Best word I can think of to describe. I rince with peroxide but there you have it. I have very good oral hygiene habits but i was told I have “soft” teeth as well as deep grooves. All back teeth have fillings. I would like to have teeth straighter but afraid to put money into it if I’m going to loose my teeth anyway. I’m basicaaly wondering if I should just go ahead and get dentures.

Dear Enquirer,
You need to ask the dentist for a definitive diagnosis ie do you have gum disease?
Early gum disease starts with an inflammation/redness of the gums called gingivitis. At this stage the bone surrounding and supporting your teeth is not affected. If this is not treated by seeing a hygienist regularly, the gingivitis can progress to periodontal disease, where the bone levels around your teeth can start decreasing. Long term, the teeth can become loose and hence it is very important to prevent gum disease at the outset. Gum disease is made worse by poor oral hygiene, smoking and there is a hereditary link, so you may be more prone to it if one of your parents also has the problem.
Once you have found out the diagnosis, you can then consider having further treatments like braces to straighten your teeth.
