I paid £8000 last July for new crowns on all my upper teeth

Q. Hello, I paid £8000 last July for new crowns on all my upper teeth. At first, when I looked closely, I could see the tops of some of crowns near the gums (i.e. small ridges where crown was not inserted far enough); but I decided not to say anything, as over-all my teeth felt and appeared better than they had in years. However, within ten months, one of the crowns broke off. Reluctantly, my dentist agreed to replace it for free, and ordered the replacement. When it arrived two weeks later, he tried to put it in place before I noticed that it was several shades darker than it should be. At my insistance, he reluctantly sent it back. Two weeks later again, the colour matched, but he forced it into place. In fact, I now realise that he has drilled into one of the other crowns in order to allow a gap between it and the new tooth. The gap between the new tooth and its other neighbour is too narrow for any dental floss; it is totally closed. Incidently, after 24 hours, the new tooth is loose. After all this, I do not trust the dentist to do any more of his “repairs”, yet I cannot afford to go to another dentist and pay for the work. What recourse do I have?

A. The first port of call is to discuss your concerns with your dentist.  They will have a complaints procedure in place to help you sort this problem out.
