I’m terrified that I’ll loose all my teeth and I don’t want invasive surgery. What are my alternatives?

Q. I thought I had pretty good teeth, I am 53 and they are white and very good shaped. the Dentist said yesterday I have gum disease (deep kind at the bone) at back of both lower and upper. talking about gum surgery and other one hour sessions in the chair and lots of money I dont have. importantly I dont feel I can go through with the invasive side of this deep cleaning of root etc. Whats my alternative – would it cure me if I have them out – I just cant do this and I am terrified. I am manic about teeth and cant believe this has happened in 21/2yrs since all fine. whats the easiest way through it, general anaesthetic at dental hospital or have them out or what. Help!! Im sick with worry, how long have I got , will all my teeth fall out and how soon??????,
A. The advice here is to take a little time to get used to the new situation you are in. Patients with extensive Gum disease will need a higher maintenance programme for prolonged periods of time and this does have a cost. However dentures are most peoples first choice and therefore it might be worth considering a removing only those teeth that require extensive or complex treatment, then salvage the remaining teeth that can be managed by simple cleaning with less deep cleaning. After the initial treatment has been given time to have an effect, you can better assess the long term plan. Hopefully this will mean that you will keep the natural white and well shaped teeth you are happy with. Hope this helps Rob
