I have noticed that the top of my front teeth are becoming transparent. What could it be?

Q. I have never had any problems with dental hygiene and have never had any fillings but recently I have noticed that the top of my front teeth (top and bottom) are becoming rather transparent. I am extremely worried and don’t know what this means. What could it be?,
A. Dear Enquirer, If your teeth are becoming transparent it may be as a result of acid erosion. Acid erosion is where certain foods (eg. fruits, vinegar) and drinks (eg. wine, fruit teas) that we consume lead to a condition where the tooth enamel is more easily worn away. If your tooth transparency is as a result of acid erosion, then you can help to stop any further damage to your teeth. Firstly, avoid brushing teeth immediately after consuming acidic food or drinks as this is when the enamel is at its softest. Secondly, limit the number of acidic drinks you consume daily. Thirdly, drink acidic drinks quickly. Fourthly, brush your teeth gently and thoroughly. Finally, see your dentist regularly for a dental examination. Your dentist will also be able to recommend specific oral hygiene products which will help re-harden the enamel. I hope that this helps. Sunita
