i have a damaged my front tooth that is discoloured

Q. I recently had an accident and damaged my front tooth. My dentist says that the tooth is dead. It has now turned a horrible colour. She said I need a root canal and then either tooth whitening or a veneer if the whitening doesn’t work. Would you be able to get the tooth back to its usual colour? How much would it cost?

A. Hi many thanks for your email, when you get a knock to a tooth, this can be one of the main problems with the trauma. the tooth’s nerve dies, and the tooth can discolour. internal whitening can help once the tooth has been root canal treated, but is not stable and can discolour again. the more permanant solution would be a veneer or crown. my advice would be to consult a cosmetic dentist to discuss your options in depth. the cost of a specialist root canal is £395, the cost of internal whitening is £250, the cost of a single tooth veneer is £795. hope this is helpful.

When i was very young (I’m now 30) I slipped over in the bathand cracked my right upper central incisor (this has a vaneer on it now) and damaged my left upper central incisor, so that it began to turn inwards. It has now turned about 45 degrees inwards and looks very unpleasant. I would like to have the right one looked at and possibly repaired as the vaneerwas not applied perfectly and is slightly misshapen. I would also like torepair the left one so that it looks normal again. While growing up I had a2mm gap between my 2 upper central incisors, but that’s no longer there asmy left upper is sitting just slightly behind my right. What would you recommend? How much is it likely to cost? How soon could I have it done?

I have a “splint” placed behind my lower front teeth due to movement, receding and an operation I had nearly 20 years ago. I have had it replaced twice, and repaired about 3 months ago as it had cracked on one side. It hassince cracked again and I am experiencing sensitivity now. I would like toknow if there would be other options available other than having it replaced again. Regards
