I had chemotherapy for non hodgkins lymphoma could drilling in gum be serious problem

Q. Is Bicon an inferior material for implants – I have told my dentist that another dentist has given my friend implants at the back of her mouth at a far lower cost than she is quoting. My friend is delighted with the work. However my dentist, feels that Bicon is only suitable for Back teeth. There is a big difference in costs (almost 50%) is it possible for you to advise me as I do not wish to waste my money. I leave in Kent? I have been happy with the work that dentist has done on my teeth over thirty years. I have quite a few crowns and two bridges which support two and three teeth? Seven years ago I had Chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and have been in remission since then. Could the drilling of my gum have any serious problems for me? I do hope you can give me some advice as I do not want to wast my money as I am sixty five years of age and cannot afford to waste my money because it is part of my savings. Sorry this mail is so lengthy.

A.

Bicon is a unusual system compared to the gold standard of Branemark type implants. I have no experience with the Bicon system and am unable to comment on the aesthetic results with the system.  As far as having implants following chemotherapy specifically with bisphosphonates there could be an increased chance of bone infection and osteonecrosis.
