I had a root canal done on one of my middle lower teeth

Q. Hi, I had a root canal done on one of my middle lower teeth about 10 years ago due to an abcess. I had no trouble until a few months ago when the tooth started to fall apart. My dentist told me i needed a crown. He has taken the original tooth down to gumline and inserted 4 small pins and built a little square platform for the porcelain over metal tooth to cement to. The tooth fitted ok until last week when it fell off after only being on 2 or 3 months. I am having it re-fitted in a week after it has been re-cleaned. Im wondering whether he needs to insert a post to stop it from falling off again? The other problem is that ive had bad breath ever since he fitted it….there is a hairline gap between it and my gum which i can get toothfloss right under. Am i going to be stuck with this forever or is it just poorly fitted?

A.

Lower middle teeth have very fine roots & do cause some restorative problems. Personally I would use a a post in most cases. The bad breath indicates a likely problem with the marginal seal or shape.
