I face looks round wider and larger after my ear canal surgery Is this normal?

Q. I got my braces on in March 2008. I’ve noticed my face is now more rotund, wider and larger & my jaw is more pronounced. I’ve seen my primary physician & we’ve done tests & everything attributes to orthodontics. The side of my face between my cheek bone and ear has stretched out. I can feel my jaw bone in my ear canal-more so on my right side; whereas, prior my ear canal was normal & unobstructed. I feel stuffy in my ears at times. I look worse than before. I am 5’9″ & now my face should be on someone who is 7’0″ tall. I am a caricature now. Is this temporary? Why wouldn’t the orthodontist tell me my face will change during my consultation & during treatment & should I get another consultation from another orthodontist? I have been told that this may be an occlusal problem and my orthodontist should have been aware of this during my consultation and exam prior to treatment. I feel like my jaw is separating from my face. Please help 🙁

A. The orthodontist usually aims to make very minor movements to the teeth in order to correct their alignment, I think it is unlikely that this would result in a wider, larger face as you suggest.

The stuffiness in the ear can be a result of compression in the jaw joint but may be temporary during your orthodontic work.
I would raise these concerns with your clinician and if no luck maybe have a second opinion
