I am concerned about the method of filing teeth for Invisalign. Can you tell me if it is a safe and necessary option?

Q. Dear Dr Verma Please can you confirm if “filing” teeth is a good (or only) solution with Invisalign? I do not like the idea as I am afraid that: 1. 0.5mm (recommended in my case on 3 teeth) seems a lot and will weaken my teeth 2. Could look very unattractive if any small mistake is made 3. Seems extremely unpleasant procedure Thanks in advance for your advice. Kind regards. Worried prospective Invisalign patient aged 44 years old,
A. Dear Worried Prospective Invisalign Patient, Firstly, let me put your mind at rest. For all forms of orthodontic treatment whether it be Invisalign or fixed braces, Inman Aligner, Six Month Smiles and so on, we may have do some slight stripping of the enamel. Enamel stripping is a very common procedure and involves removing some of the tooth’s enamel. There should not be any long term damage to the tooth. These adjustments create space which allow your teeth to move gently to the ideal position and are absolutely minimal, quick, easy and comfortable. I certainly would not let this deter you. Kind regards, Sunita
