How much do braces cost and can I get them on the NHS?

Q.
How much do braces cost? And is it possible to get them on the NHS?
A.
Dear Enquirer,
Orthodontics is an integral part of the NHS Dental Services. Treatment for teenagers is covered by the NHS if there is a demonstrable need. The decision is normally based on the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need. Unfortunately there are shortages of NHS orthodontic practitioners in some areas and it can sometimes be hard to access NHS orthodontic treatment.
Costs fro private treatment depend on what is the complexity of the problem and the length of treatment times and the type of brace you require. Costs can start from £1250 to £6000.
I hope this helps,
Sunita

I have a nearly 13 year old daughter who is extremely phobic. She has seen an orthodontist and meets the criteria for free nhs brace andnow needs to have 4 teeth out in order that she can have the brace fitted.however, I am unable to find a dentist who can do this for me, either underhappy gas or another sedation method. Please could you advise if a practice would be able to do this treatment.

My daughter has today been refused braces on the nhs she has a fang tooth and her bite is where her teeth sit straight on top ie she has no bite where her teeth at the top over lap the bottom one of her front teeth is already starting to wear down and she is only 12 could we contest and get a second opinion as I feel we shouldn’t have to pay to correct her teeth alignment and would this problem with her alignment eventually wear her teeth down

As I do not work in the NHS system I am unable to answer your question as I don’t know the system. Your local health authority or PCT should be able to help you Regards Mark

Leroy Says :

There are lots of options available to you, try and book a free consultation at a practice and they can go through the procedures available. Some practices offer 0% finance so you pay for your treatment monthly. Hope this helps.

this sounds a little childish and off topic but bear with me, I have just started dating a guy (for just under a week) but ive just been told i need braces. im worried im going to look a tool and i think itll really put him off! ive looked at other options but they are not available on the NHS, im19 and a student there is no way i can afford £1800 or whatever for a decent set of linguals or even £1200 for inmans, do you know of any finance type deals or loopholes that will be of benefit to myself. by this I mean quality of life etc etc?

Unfortunately I do not know of any loopholes etc… There is no easy solution here as braces take a while to correct teeth positions and as such cost. Sorry I cannot be of any other help.

I had braces for a year and a half on the NHS, then I got them removed a year ago, my teeth are now straight but I have a very distinctive overbite which makes me feel self conscious about my smile and my top teeth come out a lot. My last braces helped my overbite a little bit, but not much. Is there any way I can get braces again on the NHS? I’m really uncomfortable about my teeth and I would really like to correct them but my parents haven’t got enough money to pay for braces
