How is root canal treatment done on a crowned teeth?

Q. Dear Sir I have a crowned tooth which I have been told needs a root canal. How is this done i wonder. Is the cap is removed or a hole is made through and filled agaim. Do I need a new crown?Does crowns root canals make this more expensive

A. It is most likely that the dentist will drill a hole in the crown in order to access the root. Once he has filled the root he will then cover the hole made in the crown with some filling material in order to seal it. It is not more expensive to root canal a crowned tooth ans the crown does not have to be replaced. However if you would like it replaced for aestheic reasons, this is your choice.
