Has bone graft failed?

Q. Hello, I had a bone graft to UL1-3 area 10 days ago, however the site doesnt seem to be healing properly as i can see material beacuse the gum is not closed. My dentist seem to think that gum will pull with time but my concern is how is it possible for gum to pull when there is such a big gum and nothing seem pulling it at the moment as stiches that holded two parts of gum came off. DO you think it is a good idea to stitch the gum again or shall i wait when it heels properly? I am just worried that the gum wont close on its own and bone graft will fail. Please advise. Thanks!!,
A. My advice would be to spaek to your surgeon about your concerns, as he/she carried out the procedure and therfore will be able to give you the best advice.

I just got news from my dentist that before I get my braces on I would need to get a bone graph between my two from teeth as I have low bone density in that area and he fears I would get a black triangle. He says bonding isnt an option and that I need to get this bone graph. If i got the braces without the bone graph would there be anyother worry other than a black triangle?

I have just had 4 front lower incisor crowned teeth removed, bone density is reduced in the area due to constant abscess problems, my dentist (Apple dentists in Winterbourne) have said I cant have implants because of poor/reduced bone density in the immediate area Bristol) . the teeth were root filled many years back and the crowns were of the old post type, eventually they kept coming off, and a root split so I have had all 4 front crowns removed, and would like implants instead of this plate denture which is a terrible thing. The bone density is reduced and needs to recover or be improved/treated with bone growth stimulant, then hopefully I can maybe have a 4 toothbridge crown in its place, so I would like to speak to you regarding cost, feasibility, and time scales etc please.

my so who is 19 and very healthy lost his two front teeth playing rugby. the first part of the impant does not seem to have worked as the implants are loose and may have to be removed. what would your advise be.

he probably needs the implants removed and the bone grafted before new implants are placed.

i need to have all my teeth removed and have been quoted a price which is beyond what i can afford to have the traditional implants with a bone graft done. I dont want dentures so for my case would you recommend mini implants OR all on four or any other suggestions. a response would be greatly appreciated

Ellis Says :

Mini implants can provide an immediate fix to the overdenture design however it is not as predictable long term as traditional implants.

i like to know how you can tell the severity of jaw bone loss for doing implant?are you able to see it with just a regular x-ray or with panoramic x-ray or is there a more reliable way to show that?thx

Rogelio Says :

The best way is a CT scan, this gives you a 3d view of the jaws to help measure height width and depth before surgery

Yes, its worth getting it checked perhaps with an x-ray

i went to my dentist today to ask about dental implants and he told me my jaw bone wasn’t dense enough. What would I have to do to have a denser jaw bone? thanks for your time

Mitchel Says :

The only way you can evaluate the density of bone is by a possible ct scan.

Hi , I’ve recently had crowns & a bridge on my upper jaw , unfortunately years ago through an accident a piece of my left upper jaw was broken & lost two teeth, is it possible to have a bone graft even if the nasal cavety was expossed but has grown over with the skin from the gum, if it’s possible I’ll be looking to have implants put in as i don’t like to have a part denture, could you please advise on this matter. Thank you,

Lawrence Says :

Yes it is most likely possible. The bone will have to come from an extra oral donor site from the sound of things. You need to see someone to obtain advice on what is possible.

I’ve have an upper denture since I was 18 – I’m now 66. I wanted implants about 15 years ago, but the Maxciliofacial(sp?) surgeon said I had too much bone loss and therefore was not a candidate for implants :(. I’ve been very sad about my condition most of my life. Soo… is there hope for me with bone grafting. What is the success rate for grafting and approximately (ball park) how much? Thank you so much in advance for a response.

Kellen Says :

Grafting can be very successful and there are also other options available to patients including All on 4 and zygomatic implants. Costs are very difficult to estimate, but you need to think of a minimum of £14,000 call my clinic if you’d like a full consultation and quotation

I may have to go on to medication for osteoporosis. My dentist says he will not give me implants if I go on to biphosphates as they can affect the bone in the gum. He does not know if there would be a problem if I went onto strontium ranelate and has asked me to find out. Is there any knowledge about the effects of strontium ranelate when having a tooth removal etc. Would it be better to have all the dental work first before going on to medication or not.

Ayden Says :

To be safe have the work done well before the medication, Bisphosphonates are a contra-indication in implant therapy in some patients especially intr-venous drugs

can you tell me what a bone graft involves? i am looking to get dental implants, but my dentist is worried that i do not have enough jawbone to support the new implant. I can’t say enough about how i despise the thought of a denture plate and i understand that bridges only last for about 5-10 years and I am after something much more long lasting. What is the general success rate for bone grafts? thank you for your time

Cassandra Says :

Bone grafts are generally very successful, if you need a block graft you will need a small piece of bone taken from the lower jaw in a separate operation with the implant placed a few months later
