what is scale and polish?
Does it hurt?
How long does it take to do?
Is it the same thing as going to the hygienist for a clean-up?
I am confused.
Also, I have recently straightened my teeth using invisalign and i normally wear my retainers every night since finishing the treatment. I also floss my teeth and recently i am noticing that there are gaps appearing in my lower teeth. Is this due to the flossing? I think it is. Please can u advice me on what to do? Many thanks doctor

A scale and polish is the old term from an NHS clean. It shouldn’t hurt. I always advise you see a hygienist for your hygiene maintenance and gum and tooth cleaning (oral hygiene). I also recommend you see them for a minimum of 30 minutes but usually recommend 45-60 minutes, especially if it has been some time since your last visit. I’m glad you are flossing – this shouldn’t be the cause of any spaces. It initially sounds as if the teeth maybe slightly moving or the gums are receding, but can’t give you an exact diagnosis without seeing you. If it is the latter, I urgently advise you to see a hygienist and you may also need to see a periodontist (gum specialist).
