Do I have a root infection?

Q. Ok here is my question, We know that natural teeth are best, But say that a tooth has been sheered, say a back upper tooth is sheered down to gum level, And now lets assume its been like that for more than 10 years. When teeth are natural they can apply extreme pressures. But when you have a denture eating an apple is hard on the gums. But when the back tooth is sheered but is natural why is it, That when minimum force is applied that pain is met from the resistance force of the gum, The nerve is dead for the tooth, The nerves in the surrounding gum are all healthy, But for that half tooth or the roots that remain, it cannot sustain pressure without giving-sending out pain signals, Why is this. Thanks.
