Can I get white fillings from an NHS dentist?

Q.
Dear Dr Hughes,
I have recently moved and changed dentist. My previous (NHS) dentist gave white fillings if I needed them, so I assumed this was the norm. My new (NHS) dentist has given me a silver filling which I am unhappy with, especially as the main advantage of silver seems to be cost and the practice has expensive looking tvs in all waiting and treatment rooms. Am l being unreasonable?

I’m not an expert on NHS dentistry as I have not practised NHS dentistry for over 16 years but as far as I know ‘white’ fillings are not available on the NHS on back teeth nor have they been for a very long time. The standard item is silver amalgam.

An NHS dentist can provide ‘private’ care if requested and so you were probably paying for treatment technically outside your NHS care. You should ask your dentist though as I’m replying based on the regulations when I did NHS work many years ago. You can have any treatment you wish to have outside the NHS care that’s available but it would be private fees set by that individual dentist.

Hope that helps

Mark

Front teeth shouldn’t be a problem for a white filling on the NHS

Hi, my son is 18 and in full time education, he has been advised he needs two fillings. should you have to pay for these if the dentist is an nhs one?

Should be free but you have to be on a recognised course. Check with NHS direct.

Hi, two of my front teeth are crowned i was wondering if you do white crowns and white fillings. I actually wanted to start my dentist treatment off by whitening my teeth then changing the crowns and fillings to white ones isthis possible?

I have recently moved from St Andrews and currently do not have a dentist in Glasgow. I have a tooth that has a root canal filling, The filling has become chipped and now the tooth is starting to hurt when pressure is appliedto it. I’m wondering if treatment for this would be covered by the NHS?

I am 25 years old and have slightly crooked teeth. I was hoping to get a quote for the 6 month smile or for invisible braces or bracesyou wear on the inside. I also have 2 silver fillings which I would like to replace with white fillings. I look forward to hearing from you with someoptions and prices. Kindest regards,

I have two large fillings (bottom, back teeth) which have broken and have been told I can choose between 2 x NHS crowns or 2 x Private white fillings, with the teeth being built up.
Which would you recommend.
Thanks.
