Dear Enquirer,
The first thing to do is to go back to your dentist to look again at the night guard that was provided and to assess if you need another type of appliance to help with your tmj problem.

I have had 2 upper teeth removed 6 years ago to allow fixed brace on my front teeth. The result is 2 gaps in my teeth, and an ongoing tmj problem, where my left joint continually cracks. Could the prior movement be reversed in order to relieve the pressure on the tmj ?

Hi, I have been suffering with TMJ for about 2 years after a dental appointment to fill a wisdom tooth. The majority of my pain is a swelling by the cheek/jaw area, it appears to be affecting my saliva gland there, as the swelling only gets relieved after a ‘burst’ of saliva. It has also caused a number of problems with my ears, Tinnitus/Hearing dipping, crackling & popping noises. Anyway my question is how do you treat TMJ, by with methods? I amcurrently wearing a bite device brace, that’s suppose to bring my jaw moreforward. Its not indexed, it more like an ice rink brace. Can you help with any of this at all? Thanks

I have been experiencing many of the symptoms of TMJ problems for over a year now. I have been diagnosed with atypical facial pain and take amitriptyline. My dentist is convinced I grind my teeth and has made several bite guards that unfortunately I have been unable to wear. Today my dentist mentioned your clinic and recommended that I get in touch. I would like a consultation, please could you tell me how I can arrange this.

I have had extensive cosmetic proceedures done..i.e. crowns, veneers, bridges etc etc, over the last 9 years, and unfortunately the work was’nt done very well, as i have lost practically everything that was made for me, I now ahave a 8 denture piece, which is not only unsightly, unconfortable, and not what i wanted, but recently i have developed TMJ and the pain associated is something like i have never experienced before…ever, I am attending hospital for it, i was planning to seek legal advice, and was wondering if….TMJ can be brought on by the loss of teeth and bone, and the excessive pressures now been forced on the remaining teeth as a consequence of the missing teeth, or should my dentist have recxommended that i seek help with my TMJ immediately with a TMJ specialist. many thanks

I am having severe TMJ problems, my mouth is not opening very wide and it hurts to chew and talk. I have been told that it is something to do with a cartilage being out of place which is stopping me opening my mouth to no more than index finger wide. I have been on a soft diet and tried all sorts of self help remedies and currently taking strong ibuprofen type tablets. My jaw is swollen and as I open my mouth my jaw falls to the left. I was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome which the last consultant I saw would make an awful lot of difference as my jaw will not be fully formed Please can you tell me what sort of treatment you would recommend?

Dear Enquirer, You need to see a specialist who can help you with TMJ problems. Please book an appointment with your local maxillofacial/oral surgery hospital department, where they will be able to advise you of the best options to help you. Best of luck,

Hello Doctor, my top and lower jaw are misaligned, which often causes me some discomfort, is invisalign a good solution for this? The pain can get quite bad and im worried about TMJ which i have just recently heard about. My jaw and sometime even my neck really hurt and when at its worse the pain isn’t dulled by pain killers. I know I am not an official sufferer but have you ever treated people with TMJ before by using invisalign? thank you for your time

I would suggest you treat the pain and TMJ issue first so that the cause for the pain can be identified. You can ask your dentist for a referral.
