Can a mouthguard act as a retainer?

Q. heyi dr. butt! first of all, thank you so much for your time!! now my question…i dont get retainers with my orthodontic treatment….can mouth guards serve as retainers?,
A. hi in short mouthguards if custom made and rigid may act as an aligner but most tend to be too soft so allow tooth movement. a removable retainer costs around £75
