broken tooth crowns and pain

Q. On the top left side I believe my dentist said its tooth # 13, I broke and they had to remove the tooth. He told me that an implant wouldn’t be necessary and that best opt would be a bridge. He basically told me that he would shave the tooth behind, crown it and hook on the fake tooth in the missing spot. First time around, I had pain eating on my left side and I couldn’t sleep as I noticed my lower jaw was shifting adding pressure to my front top teeth. I went back and they had to redo the impression, said my bit was off. I found out that a bridge consisted of 3 teeth (crown the tooth behind and in front of missing tooth). I have no idea why he only shaved back tooth as I am still having problems. I’m suppose to go back tomorrow as I am having problems with the temps that were placed in. Hurts to eat on left side and again, can’t sleep on side as my lower jaw slides. What do you think is the problem? The tooth was pulled out last month…is it too late for me to get an implant and have them just crown the tooth they shaved down? I already paid $675 and still in pain. He told me that I may need a root canal but I think he messed up somewhere. How can you tell me you are going to give me a bridge and only shave one tooth? I now regret it since I just gave up a good tooth!

A. I always hate hearing stories like this because shaving down a healthy tooth is so unnecessary when an implant is an option. The canine is a very important tooth in the mouth as it guides the movement of the jaw. It always very risky making the caine in to a pontic(false tooth) which is supported by a much weaker tooth. The premolar that was shaved down ihas two nerves in it and they are very close to the side of the tooth and these teeth can have a very high root canal treatment rate when prepared for a crown

The pain and discomfort you are feeling is may be due to the fact that the nerves in the tooth have died and unfortunately you may need root canal treatment.

A bridge is a viable treatment option but it may not have been the best one for you. There is always the option of having an implant placed and a crown on the premolar.

The best thing to do is to go and have an opinion from an implant dentist so that you know your treatment options. There is always a lot of bone in the canine area so this shouldn’t be a problem.
The bridge that you have in place may notshaped properly and it may be interfering with your bite which is why your jaw slides. This does need to be resolved other wise you will continue to get problems
If you are willing to travel to my practice I would be happy to see you for a consultation.

If not, the any of the other dentists on this website would be good clinicians to go and see
Kind regards
