can you whiten teeth that have had root canal? can you advise me the best treatment?

Q. Hi, I have quite nice looking teeth and they are not really yellow or majorly stained. I want to get them whitened just to brighten them up. One of my front teeth has had root canal treatment and has started to discolour. The structure of the tooth itself is fine, but it has started to look darker than the rest. I have been told by some people that you can’t whiten a ‘dead’ tooth. Can you advise me on this. It would seem such a shame to have to have a crown or false tooth when apart from the fact it is going darker, the tooth is fine. I have been reading on the internet and some sites say that you can whiten teeth that have had root canal? Can you advise me about what would be best and what kind of treatment would you recommend? Thanks

A. It is not uncommon for teeth to darken after having root canal treatment. You must be aware that whitening a root filled tooth is not guaranteed to work- but I guess it’s definatley worth a try. I Would recommend a deep whitening system such as ENLIGHTEN. Alternatively, after you have tried the whitening and the colour still hasn’t liften- you can always consider a crown. It is advised that root filled teeth be crowned anyway for protection. Over time, the tooth will weaken and may end up fracturing. Discuss this with your dentist when you go for your consultation.
