What to do as veneers are cracking?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
Q. My son has empress veneers on eight of his teeth (top front) He had other veneers before this that were awful and bulky. These veneers are beautiful but now they are cracking. His dentist is telling him that his bottom teeth are not straight and rubbing the top. The veneers he had before never cracked, So we are so skeptical about this whole process now and of course wish we never did it. Can you offer any advice?,
A. HiMy advice would be to have a second opinion if you are unsure about the first. I am sure there is an appropriate way for them to be protected in the future.

Can anything be done for colour of temporary teeth?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. I have just had my 2 front teeth removed today as they had overlapped for years and also I had fell on the hearth when my front teeth were just coming in. I decided to have cosmetic surgery, I had this today. They have fitted temporary teeth until my empress crowns are ready in 2 weeks, Since coming home I have noticed that they are very yellow compared to my teeth and has made me feel quite depressed, is there anything I can do to whiten them??,
A. It bmay be the colour of the temporary crown material your dentist has used. I would discuss with him that you have chosen the final colour correctly and your final Empress crowns should be much lighter and match your adjacent teeth

Have dental veneers darkened over time?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. I had a complete restoration, Empress Crowns, with several veneers on the front lower teeth. The color I picked was the 2nd to the whitest on the color panel. I always wanted to have really white teeth and my smile was narrow…that is why I got the work done. Now, 7 years later, my teeth look almost 2 shades darker. I was told that the porcelain would not change color. What is happening and what can I do about it? My new dentist indicated that as I age, my real teeth are getting darker. My original dentist never mentioned any such thing. I thought I would always have a bright white smile.,
A. The porcelain probably has darkened slightly but your dentist is correct the natural tooth can absorb stain and darken which can shine through the crowns.

Worried to loose tooth due to my grinding habit can I have veneers?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
Q. Hello I grind my teeth a lot in my sleep and sometimes during the day when I am nervous or stressed. My dentist gave me a hard retainer which did not work. He then gave me a softer one which I chewed through. I now sleep with the hard one in and the soft one on top of that, and it helps but not completely. I am now starting to chew through them both. I have a lot of headaches, mainly tension ones, and I often wake up with tension in my neck and shoulders. I have also started to notice that my teeth have become much more sensitive and I am worrying that I am slowly grinding my teeth away and exposing nerves! I was wondering if I do (fingers crossed I don’t), would I be able to get veneers? Also would i get them free or would I pay? And if I did would they be made of something strong enough to put up with my grinding? Thanks!

A. Veneers would not be a good idea as you will break them.  The hard splint is what I would recommend  - it will need adjustments as your jaw settles into its correct position.  Once this has happened the muscles should relax.

Awful tooth due to bulaemia would like some treatment.

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
Q. Hi ia was wondering if u can get anything done about ur lower teeth. i had bulemic an anerexia when i was younger and my teeth are very decayed and worn. i already have a venner on the top teeth. last christmas i tried to kill my self and now my teeth are making me feel bad about myself again.

A. The limiting factor may be the extent of the decay rather than the erosion caused by Bulaemia. Counselling in conjunction with dentistry would seem a sensible first approach.

Uneven shaped teeth needs to be analysed for the correct treatment.

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
Q. Between the ages of 17 – 19 I had traditional braces. I am now 29 and find that my teeth have relapsed over time as my dentist warned they might. I wear a nightly retainer (which is a replacement if one I had and broke) but my teeth aren’t as they were when I first had my brace removed. The main issues are: a small ‘Madonnaesque’ gap between my front two teeth and the teeth wither side of those are rather short. I was wondering between veneers, invisalign and lumineers what I could consider to correct the problem. I want something that will completely close the gap without too much damage to my teeth which are white and in very good condition.

A. If the teeth are poorly shaped veneers will be the best option – lumineers are just a branded veneer. If the teeth are a nice shape then I wold recommend another brace ( may be invisalign or lingual braces) .  Once the teeth are in a good position then I would recommend a fixed retainer – V loop retainer allows you to floss your teeth and holds the teeth in their corredt position

Q. Hii, i have aproblem in my frontal teath there is aspaces between them also one of my teath part is partly broken just little part ,can i put veneers to it or what can i do ,i really want your advice? sorry for waisting your time

A. If possible I would recommend a brace of some kind to get the teeth in a reasonable position – If they are ina reasonable position then veneers are a great way of giving you a beautiful smile

Explain me on different disciplines in Cosmetic Dentistry.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hiya, I am in year 10 and planning to be a cosmetic dentist, however, I am really confused! Are there different fields within cosmetic dentistry? I was under the impression that a cosmetic dentist is a specialist in just vaneers etc… That is what I want to specialise in. Please could you help me, i’m really confused about it all! Thank you very much for your time.

A. Cosmetic dentistry involves many disciplines including function of teeth / jaws, gum and tooth health, orthodontics and restorative dentistry.  It is not just about sticking veneers on teeth.  It is great that you are interested in dentistry but cosmetic dentistry is about making profound changes to someone’s teeth in relation to not just how they look but how healthy and how they function to make sure that they last a long time.  Work hard and join us in the wonderful world of cosmetic dentistry.

Thanks

A. You will need to discuss this with your dentist as I cannot assess your situation without examining you- sorry

Confused as I cannot find a reason for my smelly and rotting teeth.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I had a veneer on my lateral incisor around 4 years ago. Last year I noticed that the tooth was discoloured around the gum line and had a bad smell/taste and feeling of pressure – never pain. After several courses of antibotics my Dentist performed root treatment, twice as it was unsuccessful the first time. My tooth still smells and tastes bad and my dentist is baffled – any ideas? I think perhaps there is a gap between the veneer and my tooth and that the front shell of my tooth is rotting, could that be the case – is there anything can be done? Thanks

A. You either have the abscess still present, gum disease or decay underneath your veneer.

Will dentinogenesis cause problem in having veneers?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. When i was very young i believe i was diagnosed with i think its called dentyne a gein or something similar, because my daughter was diagnosed with it as well.My problem is that i have small teeth and would like to have verneers but my dentist says it is not possible because of the pressure that would be put on them is this true and what can i do

A. I believe your condition is dentinogenesis Imperfecta – This is where the dentine fails to form properly and the enamel breaks away.  It is difficult to treat because the teeth are weaker and the dentine is difficult to bond to.You need to be properly assessed  and may be referred to a postgraduate dental hospital.

Veneers have broken should I consider rebonding a veneer or crown?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Hi Rob, I have several (5) Veneers . They have lasted be for around 15 years. Recently one has broken ( cracked and 1/3 of it fell off). My dentist would like to replace it with a crown as he is concerned about rebonding a veneer. Personally i would prefer another veneer. is there an expert opinion on the pros and cons of this repair

A. There should be no problem rebonding a veneer , maybe there are some other issues. The pro and cons will relate to the subtle details of the individual and you will need a clinical assement for the second opinion. For more details please contact us directlyRob0121 643 0610.

Is 16 years not eligible to have veneers?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. I was wondering if it is possible to get veneers on the nhs, as i had 2 accidents over the years and on each, chipped both my front teeth. At the moment I have caps on them both but one fell off and was put back on so that it sticks forward. The caps are also discoloured and noticible when you look at them. I was told by my dentist that when i reached 16 i could have veneers, yet when i asked at my last appointment he dismissed the question. I am now nearly 17 and have no confidence in my smile, i cannot smile with teeth and it gets me down. If i am not entitled to get veneers on the nhs then how much would it cost per tooth? the 2 teeth on either side of my front teeth are also very wonky aswel and i have gaps in these 4 teeth aswel as the discoloured and wonky caps.

A. If the veneers are justified for functional reasons, then standard veneers are available on the NHS and can also improve the appearance of your teeth. If you want a specific change in the appearance it is likely to be a private tooth veneer. Prices range from £350- 800 per tooth,  at the upper end systems like lumineers, DaVinci, and emax are brand leaders. Before spending significant money you should check that the gum level has ” matured & stabilised” around the teeth because the veneer will follow the existing shape. In some people this takes till around 21 years old.Rob

What are the disadvantages of veneers used for fixing teeth gap?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Hi, i want to close my front gap teeth but i want to know the disadvantages of having veneers and also when you say for example,£200 per unit does that mean per teeth hope to hear from u soon thank

A. Per unit does mean per tooth in most cases. Veneers can be no drilling ( such Lumineers or DaVinci systems )or some drilling and that may make the procedure irreversible without continuing with veneers if the teeth have been prepared.Rob
