Options for straight beautiful teeth for the older people

Sunday, September 20th, 2009
Q.
I am 61 years old and as seems to be with many older people I have considerable movement of my lower teeth resulting in them bunching in the front. My upper teeth now also appear to be moving and I would like to have them corrected. Is this possible? I should say I enjoy good health both orally and physically and participate in regular excercise and have never smoked. I visit the dentist for check ups regularly but have been told I am too old to bother with this. Your opinion would be appreciated.

Are veneers the quick fix to close gaps?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
Q.
Below is the Q&A from yesterday. I wondered whether you could clarify things for me. You said veneers are the quick fix, does that mean that you would always expect to close all gaps and never use veneers or does the bite determine this? I am aware I would need a retainer for a couple of years but what I don’t want is for my teeth to move to fill the gaps. Is it possible to use something behind the veneers to fill the gap to prevent the movement? Q. I am 41 and have had fixed braces for nearly 2 years after having had 4 teeth removed. My lower jaw is fine but I have been told that I will be left with gaps on my upper jaw behind my canines due to the size and shape of my teeth. Is this normal? It has been suggested that I now have 4 veneers to hide the gaps, is there any other alternative? Will the veneers stop my teeth from moving? A. The veneers would be a quick way of reducing the size of the gaps instead of the brace which can often take 1-2 years to close the gaps sufficiently. They don’t stop the teeth moving so a new retainer would be needed after they are fitted

Im 24 i have undergone re root canal treatment but the pain persists

Saturday, September 5th, 2009
Q.
Hi Mr Moore, I was a patient of yours until you left Mr Clough’s practice when I was 15. I’m disappointed to report that the poster has been removed from the ceiling of your old consulting room so now there’s nothing to distract patients from the drilling! Anyway, when I was 9 I fell over and broke my front two top teeth. When I was 15 you root canaled my front two teeth as well as the next one along to the right and then veneered them. I’m 24 now and i’ve known for some years there was a very slow growing infection above the root of the front left tooth and the one to its left. I was advised for years by oral surgeons at St John’s to leave it alone for the time being, until last November when Mr Falconer advised me I should have them re root canaled. Mr Brady at Clough’s practice re-did the front two, and also canaled the one to the left of the front two for the first time. This was done at Christmas. So now all four at the front have been root canaled – the middle two twice each, and the ones either side once each. I’ve been back to see him today because i’ve been experiencing sensitively for the last 3 weeks, usually when I have a drink. This in itself surprised Mr Brady because you’d think due to the very nature of a root canal that I wouldn’t be able to feel anything. Unfortunately the dark patch on the xray above my front left and the one next to it is darker again. We don’t think the bone ever fully recovered, despite the cleaning material that was packed into them at Christmas, however, the patch is now definitely darker again. Mr Brady mentioned that he didn’t think it was infection as such but the bone density seems to be suffering. Mr Brady is quite keen to do an apisectomy. I’m not quite so keen as my Mum ( who you also treated over the years) had two of these done at St John’s not all that long ago and suffered some gum recession. As i’m only 24 and have veneers on the front two i’m nervous about this side effect. The alternative Mr Brady suggested was to privately see an endodontist to re root canal again – he’s referred me to Richard Hems at the Colchester Dental Referral Centre. This option would be much more costly, presumably with no risk of gum recession, but I don’t know what the success rate is like. We very much trusted you for all the years you were our family dentist and i’d really appreciate your opinion as to which might be the better option for me. Kind regards

Are veneers or braces better for crooked teeth?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
Q.
Hi there The 2 teeth next to my front teeth are crooked (they protrude forwards) Would i be better to go for a brace or have a veneer? I’ve heard that braces work but the results are not permanent..so this puts me off. Are veneers more permanent?

can u suggest an alternative for night guard?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
Q.
Hi,I have recently been told by my dentist that the damage to my teeth is caused by grinding during the night. This is evident as i have very bad wear on my two front teeth. They are a lot shorter than my other top teeth and have formed an arch shape. It has got to the stage where people are noticing and i am reluctant to smile.I have been given a night guard to wear but i feel my teeth need to be treated with caps or veneers as well as the further protection that the guard will give, what do you recommend?
