Q. Hi, I am a 49 year old male and i have lost all but 3 of my top teeth, and dont have that many left on the bottom, can you help me please?
A. The treatment for you will probably be a combination of dentures and implants. The best result would be a fixed bridge attached to implants but this depends on the amount of bone available for the implants and of course cost

Q. i had a fronr tooth capped due to absess some years ago i came out some time ago and a dentist said that the rest of the tooth has to come out i agree with this but i am terrified of dental work i want to have either an implant or a bridge inserted but the gum where this tooth was has receeded [where they cut my gum to remove the absess]please advise me of the best option i am 65 and suffer with copd
A.
Usually I would recommend an implant because the research shows that they last the longest. However you would need to be assessed for bone volume for the implant and have the aesthetics carefully assessed

Q. i had bridge work done all of the upper not happy with the results, one side seen lower the teeth seem too big, did have some adjustments, still not happy, also this took almost 3 months to complete. what are the procedure to have this redone. not happy
A. Very sorry to hear that you are not happy with the result of your bridge. The only thing to be done now is to have it redone. If you came to see me I would firstly assess exactly what you are not happy with using photographs and possibly imaging. Impressions of your existing bridge would be taken and a diagnostic mock up of your teeth would be made in wax on the model. When your bridge is removed this mockup would be used to produce a beautiful temporary bridge and any adjustments would be made at this stage until you are happy. This would then be copied to make the final bridge. In this way the aesthetics are very carefully controlled. This could be completed before Xmas but you will need to contact my surgery as soon as possible as my clinical time is limited due to lecture commitments. I hope to see you soon.

Q. I am about to have lower front pincer tooth extracted, can you please advice on what to get, a partial denture or a bridge and what type. My dentist has not explained the options, please can you help me decide I am at my wits end with worry. As soon as possible.
A. A denture is the quickest and simplest method to fill the gap. I would recommend this for immediately after having the tooth removed, after this you could have a bridge or an implant if you want a permanently fixed in tooth.

Q. I have a missing tooth needing a bridge. I have been advised that a CEREC replacement would be better than a normal bridge because the CEREC materials are chemically bonded to your neighbouring healthy teeth. This would enable my dentist to save as much healthy tooth tissue as possible. Is a CEREC bridge preferable as it allows the dentist to save more of your neighbouring healthy teeth?
A. I would not advise a Cerec bridge as the materials available at the moment are only plastic for bridges

Q. I just had a 6 unit full porcelain bridge placed in December of 2009, I just noticed a very tiny chip in between my two front teeth. Is this repairable?
A. Thanks for your question, it is possible that the dentist would be able to repair the chip without removing the bridge.

Q. thanks for taking the time to read this. basically i had an accident while playing football which has led to me losing over half of one of my front teeth and the other front tooth being pushed back out of place. also along with that my bottom teeth are quite covered in plaque and rotten due to many a years cola drinking without looking after my teeth and they have become quite rotted and were also slightly pushed back in the accident and feel quite sore. ive not had a dental visit for 12 yrs until i had emergency surgery the day after the accident and all the dentist did was pull my front tooth forward again and glue it to the tooth next to it aswell as to the snapped tooth which he appears to have just covered in glue aswell to stop me cutting my mouth open on. i really dont like the sound of having false teeth put in place as my front teeth top ot bottom but it seems i may lose most of them if this repair work wasnt successful and if my bottom front teeth cant be saved. what are my options as im a unemployed nhs dental user. thanks for yor time
A. Thanks for your questions, I’m sorry to hear about your recent trauma. If you are unfortunate and do have to lose some of your teeth, dentures may not be the only option available to you. It would depend on the stability of the healthy teeth either side of your gap, but you may be able to have a bridge. A bridge is made by putting crowns on the teeth at either side of the gap and then joining the two crowns together by attaching a false tooth in between them. However sometimes the dentist will advise that you have a temporary denture in place for a while after you lose the teeth to allow for the healing process. I hope this helps.

Q. Several yrs ago I had 5 front teeth worked on. 3 are on a bridge 2 were on posts. 2 yrs ago one of the teeth broke off at the root (abssesed) and had to have it pulled. Now one of the front teeth which is on a post is loose. I went to a dentist and he tried to remove cap but couldn’t. He used what he called a blue bos. Felt like a hydaulic hammer. Now he says he will have to cut the cap off, replace the post & make a bridge for the front tooth, the tooth next to it (currently have to wear mouth piece and use one of my incisors for the bridge. My concern is what if the root which has had 2 prior root conals done on it (freak, yes) also breaks off at the root. The other side of this is fron tooth capped, next tooth capped, next tooth incisor tooth missing and part of bridge. So we are talking about my entire front teeth. I hope you understand and can help. I am worried. My dentist can’t get me in until Dec. 3rd, although he got me in in a week of never seeing him before and then again that very same day.
A. It sounds like you need to have the teeth fully assessed if they are that weak you may need to think about dental implants, which will provide you with new teeth and last a lot longer.

Q. I am fed up with my teeth they are badly in need of alot of work.I am 33 years old and my teeth look like they belong to a 65 year old. I am missing my upper right central, my upper right lateral is very very loose now also the same applies to the upper left lateral,they can easily move with a little push.I think i need to remove these as well with upper left central and either get implants or a bridge. what would you suggest i do? Really need some good advice and also what kind of money would you be talking for each of the above mentioned procedures.

Q. I have a partial denture for my upper left and right lateral incisors, but am interested in looking at implants, as this would be a more permanent solution.I admit I have not looked after my teeh very well in the past but I am determined to this time but dont fancy wearing dentures long term – my NHS dentist has mentioned veneers or bridges but not sure about that either. Q. At the moment I have a 4 tooth bridge which is at the front on my upper teeth. It is a hinge which I have been told is broken so at the moment this is only supported on the one side which is on a post. I have been told by 2 dentists that as this is a large bridge I will now have to have a denture which although not happy have accepted this is the only solution. My problem that before I had my bridge had a plate and as have a strong gag reflex didn’t not get on with this at all also when I was eating it shifted as was most uncomfortable. I have been shown a denture that is metal and doesn’t seem to cover the roof of my mouth would this be a better option than the normal partial acrylic denture for me? I have been told that this is not available on the NHS? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
A. hi many thanks for your email, my advice is to think about dental implants which are fixed and do not require a plate. the cost of a four unit bridge on two implants are approx £5000. msny practices do offer interest free credit to help finance the treatment.

Q. I have a bridge (top six teeth) with a broken/chipped tooth. I have had it repaired several times but the repair keeps breaking off. Basically it is non functional. Is there a way to remove my bridge and replace the chipped one or some other procedure to fix it permanently?

Q. Hi Dr. Moore, I just had a root canal done about a month ago on one of my molars (the 6th tooth on my right). And as recommended I went back to my regular dentist yesterday to get a crown . However, my regular dentist personally feels that it is better to just go with the filling as I have a lot of good teeth structure. Her only worry is that I grind my teeth at night. So I’ve got a night guard. She told me to give some time to consider whether or not I should really get a crown because she thinks my teeth should last for a long time if I’m careful. What is your recommendation and view towards this? Thanks
A. Hello, it is common practice to crown a tooth after a root canal as the tooth is more brittle. However if that involves extensive loss of tooth structure you could consider a ceramic inlay. This is stronger than a filling but less destructive than a crown. Regards Andrew

Q. Hi. I went to the dentist a few weeks ago, I had a tooth that was lose. She told me it was a baby canine. After doing an x-ray, she said the tooth on the other side was also a baby, and that both adult tooth, were still up in the gums. She talked about braces and having the adult teeth exposed. I really do not want to have braces. I’m 26. Is it possible to just have the baby teeth removed and have veneers put in instead???
A. hi many thanks for your email, if you have the baby teeth extracted, your fixed options are:
1: braces, expose the adult teeth and try to bring them down.
2: bridges on both sides to replace the missing teeth. so no need for braces.

Q. hi i am a student of 21 and have been avoiding the dentist for most of my life, after a traumatic experiance and have sadly ruined my teeth and have recently joined a new dentist after ,moving and unfortunetly have been told all my teeth need to be removed and will need dentures and bcos of my age i dont feel this is a option for me and would like to go down the road of full mouth dental implants and was wondering if you could give me a rough estimate of the price is likely to be thanx

Q. Dear Dr Caplan, Could you help…. I had a bad tooth removed by my nhs dentist, the option for me was to have a cap tooth fitted and glued to the tooth next to it,,After fitting th tooth felt too big and I was told this was a normal feeling even though it also loooked too big, after only two weeks the tooth became loose and fell out, so I went to another dentist, the tooth was altered and refitted again by bonding mixture,, I was told again that the tooth would stay in for years.. only a few days later the tooth is again loose and I cannot eat antyhing on that side of my mouth in fear of it falling out again. Could you advise what I should do next Kind regards
A. The cause for stick on bridge failing is often due to the bite being incorrect. With you saying that the tooth feels too big this may well mean that it is in the way of your bite. ANother cause is that the bridge deos not fit sorectly or that the pressures from your opposing teeth are to great. You may need a new bridge or may be even an implant
