My dentist has put crowns on my fillings, why is this?

Q.
Hello,

I had a very large deep filling 6 months ago.

My dentist was not sure if it would work as it was so deep and a large amount of tooth missing. It did work and now 6 months on I went for a check up and he has booked me in for a crown fitting.

The dentist provied no explanation for the crown and I was left confused. I am not altogether happy with my dentist, I am never provided with full explanations and all my appointments seems rushed.

I got a second opinion from a dentist friend (they did not actually see me, but we talked over the phone) my friend said a crown is not needed as the filling/tooth is not causing bother to me. I also asked my hygenist who said the crown may not me neccessary.

I am usure what to do? Stay as I am with the filling and see how I go or have a crown fitted?

Get another opinion from a different dentist?

Thanks

A.
The communication seems an issue rather than the clinical judgement which you cannot second guess. It is reasonable in some cases to refill and wait to check that the nerve does not react. then crown the tooth using the filling as a core without needing to completely strip back the filling and risk upsetting the nerve. I cannot comment if this was the case.
Hope this helps

Question: I have gold crowns in the front of my mouth. They have been there for years, about 10 years I had them redone and now I do not want them. I want a white smile now.
Is it possible for me to have them removed and replaced with white crowns.?
I have some crowns now but I am worried because where the gum meets the tooth, I can see darkness, and I do not want this in the front of my mouth? Whats causing the discoloring of the crowns and is this normal???
