Is it legal to whiten teeth without qualifications?

Q.
Hi there,

I am very confiused about all of they hype surrounding teeth whitening!
I want to open my own mobile business offering this service however i want to stay within the law.
FUS beauty school are offering training with a product called b-zero that claims to be 100%peroxide and chlorine dioxide free products. Is it legal for me to whiten peoples teeth if this is the case!
Do you need to be a registered dentist to perform teeth whitening?
I am feeling very confused about it all!

Any advice would be much appreciated?

Kind Regards

A.
Hi Chrissy

Please conatct the General Dental Council or British Dental Association for advice

You only people legally allowed or indeed qualified to give advice about your teeth and their suitability for teeth whitening procedures are dentally qualified professionals

Some products may be available that you could apply legally but this would only be following the advice , prepscription and supervision of a dentist

No beauty school can teach you about all the potential dental conditions and hazards that could cause a patient harm if they are selected inappropriately for teeth whitening.

Hope that helps

Mark

Susan Omar Says :

Hello there
I naively took a teeth whitening technician course with a company in Manchester, thinking everything would be fine, the deal included enough equipment for 100 clients and a blue light.
The day of training came and two guys in a red escort drew up at my door and started to bring the equipment in my house, I had my model ready and one of the men talked me through it setting the blue light timer to 15 minutes, he flipped through an iPad and read out a few key points of do’s and don’ts, and there you go he could’t wait to get out the door quick enough as soon as I paid him his £1,350. It had dodgy written all over it to be honest but however being made redundant from the nhs after 12 years and at the age of 55 I just thought I had to give it a try. So I read the notes he gave me and more from the internet, had business cards and leaflets made and away I started. I began doing family to get confidence up using sodium perborate and then started getting phone calls from clients who were very happy with the results, I had not one complaint regarding sensitivity and was so happy to build my business up. Then someone said to me one day that they thought it was illegal according to the GDC ( a body I had never heard of) and it started me thinking, that’s when I did lots of reading about it and even rang them to ask, I was so upset when they told me I could not carry on. The next week making it worse I got a letter from the GDC saying that there had been an allegation against me and that I had to stop or would be prosecuted, I was horrified that someone would do that, but I had already stopped by that time. My question to you is, most people see teeth whitening and myself included to be cosmetic, I understand why the GDC put this law in place but why are there so many companies doing this training and getting away with it if it’s illegal?
Why are teeth whitening kits available so easily? Should’nt people have a choice? It just seems unfair when all it entailed was basically painting the teeth that you see when you smile, with no sensitivity and putting a light to them. Maybe the GDC put this law in place to protect the dentists but maybe also that they get all the money as they are not cheap, thanks for reading
Kind regards Susan
